Good WGU Degree Combos for Getting Jobs
A ton of people ask which WGU degrees give them the best chance of actually getting hired. This is a list of WGU paths that I think give you the best shot at getting your foot in the door quickly.
- Nursing BS → RN license If WGU's nursing program qualifies you for licensure in your state, this is probably the strongest job-getting option WGU offers. The RN shortage is very real.
- Shortage-area Teaching BS → teaching credential This depends heavily on your subject and location. Special education, math, science and other shortage areas can have very strong hiring demand. Do some research about your specific state first, as there are a few exceptions to this.
- WGU Accounting BS → Accounting MS at a recruiting/target school → CPA The important part is using the master's to get access to campus recruiting and internships. "Target" doesn't mean expensive or elite; a cheap state school heavily recruited by accounting firms works fine.
- Supply Chain BS A bit of a sleeper. The bachelor's alone opens the door to a legitimate professional field with decent demand and doesn't require graduate school.
- Computer Science BS → Georgia Tech MSCS Georgia Tech's online MSCS is highly ranked and extremely cheap for what it is (under $10,000). The software job market is rough right now, so this isn't an easy-job option, but it gives you a very strong academic resume and a real shot at some aspirationally great jobs.
- Health Information Management BS → RHIA The RHIA credential makes where you got the degree unimportant.
- WGU BS Cybersecurity → Cyber Range internship (optional Georgia Tech MS Cybersecurity) The WGU degree provides a useful stack of certifications, while The Cyber Range gives you hands-on work and an internship for your resume. Cyber is still a difficult entry-level market, but this combination addresses the biggest problem most new cyber grads have: no experience or day 1 skills.
- Human Resource Management BS (optional MS HR and/or SHRM-CP) A straightforward degree-to-career path. The master's may help somewhat, but not enough to recommend it.
- IT BS (optional MS IT) The degree plus WGU's included certifications gives you a reasonable shot at help desk/support and other entry-level IT jobs, with opportunities to move into higher-paying IT or cybersecurity roles later.
A couple notable alternatives:
WGU BS + MS Computer Science or Software Engineering: Perfectly fine, but I'd strongly consider Georgia Tech's MSCS instead if you can handle it. Graduates from Georgia Tech get interviews at elite companies like Google and Microsoft much more easily.
WGU Accounting BS + WGU Accounting MS + CPA: Good long-term credentials, but without an internship, getting that first accounting job can still be difficult. Once you get a year of experience things will get easier, but this list is about getting the first job quickly and easily.
These obviously aren't the only WGU degrees that can lead to good careers. This list is only about combinations that are likely to make getting your first job quick and easy.
