ALDI - Korean Style Chicken with Spicy Gochujang Sauce.
Hello Team,
Welcome back to another extremely scientific review of ALDI Korean Style Chicken with Spicy Gochujang Sauce.
Tl;dr - 5/10 chicken on its own, chicken with sauce my wife scored 8.5 and I scored 8.
Now to the review -
The way these reviews are done, we establish a baseline score for the item and then see whether or not a sauce or different preparation improves the taste.
We also keep in mind the price point of the reviewed products - you're obviously not going to get restaurant quality Korean food out of a six dollar frozen ALDI product.
While the chicken was cooking I was reminded of a very particular smell from my childhood, sitting in the local Chinese takeout spot playing Frogger waiting for our takeout to be prepared, it just smelled so strongly of plain vegetable oil. Strange memory but it's pretty vivid.
When we tasted the chicken we found it to be quite bland and lacking any strong flavor. The texture of the batter was kinda gummy but it wasn't particularly offensive. Perfectly fine as a vessel for sauce.
My wife and I both scored 5.
Chicken with Gochujang sauce -
Keeping in mind that this is a frozen chicken product that costs 6 dollars we found the sauce to be really, really good. It added a sweet and savoury flavor along with a nice fermented quality, a little bit acidic.
We didn't get any spice out of the sauce, absolutely no heat detected despite being advertised as "spicy". Whilst my heat tolerance is particularly high, my wife's isn't and she didn't feel like there was any heat whatsoever which was a little disappointing.
The chicken and sauce received an 8.5 from my wife and I gave it an 8.
Chicken with a combination of Gochujang sauce and kewpie mayo -
Not as good as the chicken and gochujang. The mayo did add something, a kind of sweet flavour, however it detracted a little from the other qualities that the sauce by itself had. My wife gave it an 8 and I gave it at 7. Not bad, just kinda meh.
Again - thanks a bunch for reading, have an awesome week and we'll catch y'all around on the flipside. Adios.
