What are your side hustles (not clinical work)

Academic EM doc here, fellowship trained. 6 years out.

Curious what many of you are doing to make extra money on the side that doesn’t involve working more shifts, moonlighting, locums etc

Real estate?
Ownership stake in urgent care/medspas etc?
Car wash?
Brewery?
Uber/lyft?
Crypto?
Options/day trading?

In all seriousness, how did you get into it? I’ve thought about real estate syndication deals but some of the people running these deals seem very shady and over promise. I’ve thought about trying to have equity in an urgent care or something but don’t even know where to start or if it’s worth it.

I love my job and have lots of protected time to do what I want and work only a few shifts a month. I dont want to leave my current W2 position. That being said the academic world does place constraints on how much money you can make so was curious what my options were. I’ve already done the basics like max out all retirement accounts/tax deferred accounts. I have my emergency fund, and a brokerage account with some potential high growth stock but it’s a very small percentage of my portfolio. I have my Roth from residency that I maxed out. Also have about 40% equity in my house and trying to pay it off as quickly as possible. Paid off all student loan debt

This is just something extra looking to do, maybe that I enjoy/hobby as well, but curious what others have done and what worked/didnt. Seems like many of these types of endeavors fail and I only hear about the 1 percent success stories.

Wallet birthday gift for the ladyfriend

I know, I know, I should go for something from an independent wallet maker. I would love to get her a beautiful veg tan wallet that will age like wine and develop a rich patina with use. However, my girlfriend said she wants “something cute”.

She carries a bigger/bulky clutch zipper thing now from Tory Burch that has way too much junk in it and too many expired Sephora gift cards. She wants something much smaller but cute.

Translation cute = designer

Probably something that carries 4-6 cards. Maybe a few slips of cash. One of those wrist bracelet things maybe that can loop her hand through?

I doubt I will get away without spending less than $500 but any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Mitchell money clip wallet

In Chestnut Horween Dublin. Great capacity, very minimalist footprint, awesome design and craftsmanship is going to age amazingly well. Can’t wait to get some more patina on it. Also can’t say enough good things about the customer
service from David Mitchell himself.

Definitely my favorite wallet to date

Three story townhome zoning issues

As the title states I have a three story townhome. My system is about 8 years old.

Intermittently maybe once a week when I put the air on the 3rd floor, the temperature doesn’t drop but the system is blowing but no air coming out of the vents.

First company said the entire damper needs to be fixed/replaced. That people were just replacing the motor over and over and it was just burning out and the definitive fix was to fix the damper. 1400 bucks. I said ok. They never came to do the repair or answered any of my calls.

Second company was recommended by a friend. They came the first time and said it’s not the damper, it’s just the damper motor that needs to be fixed. 200$ fix. The guy was too big to fit into the attic crawl space which is very small, maybe a foot in height. He said they would send another guy who was skinnier. Next guy was even bigger than the first one and said he couldn’t do it. Third guy sent who was skinny but he didn’t bring a ladder tall enough.

What am I to do? How do I get this fixed? Also now on the second floor the thermostat is set to 72 but the temperature inside reads 68 and cold air is blowing through the vents on the second floor.

Do these diagnoses seem completely ridiculous? I recognize the access issues aren’t the fault of the technicians and it’s a terrible design for the house. But still, there must be a way to fix it. I would even approve then cutting a hole in the drywall to get better access.

1 year old pup won’t eat

My one year-old female (intact) has had food issues since we brought her home. Initially there was a lot of diarrhea and G.I. upset however, I think for the most part we have gotten that resolved. She started off on Royal Canin golden retriever puppy formula which she didn’t tolerate. Then moved to Royal Canin GI prescription at the request of her vet which she refused to eat. Then switched to Purina Pro Plan sensitive stomach and skin Salmon which she shunned. Then switched to Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach lamb which she also shunned.

I’m at my wits end. She is a smaller golden per the vet (only 52 lbs) but she is healthy weight wise. No ribs showing. Full of energy. Drinking water. Inhales treats. Her blood work and stool testing have been great. The vet seems to think this is her just being picky.

We don’t give her human food or change up her kibble or anything. I leave out for 15 minutes and then put it up like I was instructed to do. It doesn’t work. At the next meal she may have a bite and then I do it again. There are days when she goes by without eating. There are other days where she will have maybe 1 cup (or the recommended 4.5 cups a day). I’m concerned this is going to have some long term health effects.

I’ve been told to avoid toppers etc. I’ve been told that “healthy puppies don’t starve themselves”. But I’m told she’s healthy by the vet and she is also starving herself.

I’m at my wits end. I just want her to eat and be healthy. I’m fairly sure she, like many goldens, has a chicken allergy so I’m trying to be careful of what food she gets but I don’t think it’s the food. The first few days on the salmon food she inhaled it. Then she ignored it after that. I feel like she’s hungry but she’s not eating but again I’m being told by two different vets that it’s all behavioral and pickiness.

Any advice? Just let it go since she’s healthy and happy otherwise? Switch the food again? Say to hell with it and give in to toppers? What are my best options here?

Romance for dudes?

Looking for a romance novel from a male perspective. Preferably NOT fantasy/sci-fi themed. Just like a normal romance novel. Thanks!

Time to give back to this subreddit. Here’s all we did on our most recent trip!

I utilized this subreddit heavily for our trip to Maui and want to give a report on everything to hopefully help future visitors.

First and foremost: this trip was mostly about beach time and relaxation. I’ve done the RTH in the past and while it was amazing it was an exhausting day and didn’t feel like repeating it again.

Another important piece of advice… I think it’s worthwhile scheduling at least 2 buffer days into your itinerary. I got pretty sick (picked up a bug on the flight over) so it was very nice to have a few days to do nothing and recover by the pool. The jet lag also hit me harder than expected.

Day 1:
Arrival and rental car pickup
Drove to Wailea Beach Resort (LOVED OUR STAY HERE)
Dinner at Monkeypod

Day 2:
Resort time
Spent the morning at Wailea Beach
Poke bowls from Island Grocery
Room service since I was feeling under the weather

Day 3:
Resort time
Don’t remember anything else

Day 4:
Kaanapali day on the beach
Snorkeling black rock (rented snorkel gear and beach umbrella/chairs from Auntie Snorkel, they were awesome)
Shopped Whalers Village
Dinner Paia Fish Market in Kīhei (was pretty good)

Day 5:
Ulua beach snorkeling and beach time
Dinner at Merrimans Kapalua (great sunset and scenery. I thought the food was good but the venue was better. Reserve months in advance)

Day 6:
TRILOGY DISCOVER LANAI TOUR HANDS DOWN BEST DAY OF THE ENTIRE TRIP
Amazing snorkeling in Lanai (world class)
Great hike near the beach
Saw two species of dolphins and turtles, such a pleasant catamaran experience. The crew was amazing very attentive without being annoying.
Pizza at the resort for dinner

Day 7:
Polo beach lounging and boogie boarding
Pool time in the afternoon (adults only pool at WBR is great)
Dinner at Gather (wailea golf course) amazing views great food and service highly recommend

Day 8:
Shopping at the shops at Wailea to buy gifts for friends and family
Haleakalā sunset with poke bowl dinner on the mountain

Day 9:
A little bit of resort time in the morning before returning snorkel gear and heading back to the airport!

We booked through Costco travel with Wailea Beach resort and honestly I couldn’t recommend it enough. The free parking and included resort fee is great. But the best perk was the free breakfast buffet everyday ($100 value). The food is expensive everywhere so not having to worry about breakfast was nice in addition the food was delicious.

A note about snorkeling (this is controversial): I thought the snorkeling off the beach was decent depending on the conditions. However I think the Trilogy snorkel expedition was the best I’ve ever had. It is expensive and while snorkeling can be enjoyed from the beach I think if it’s a priority definitely do the excursion. We passed on Molokini because of the sentiment that it was a bit overrated and the Lanai snorkel experience did not disappoint.

That’s all! Not much we would’ve done differently. Feel free to hit me up with questions. Thanks to everyone on this subreddit for some great recommendations! We will be back again soon!

Natural veg vs natural shell?

I’m looking at buying the Tauruscamp Grain wallet.

I have found in my quest for wallets that I’m not getting as dramatic patina as I thought.

Between the natural veg tan and the natural shell cordovan which one has the most patina potential? I have feeling they both patina but do so differently and I’m trying to understand which I would like better

Feel like I need to “do more”

Background: 40 year old. 6 years into clinical practice. 340k annual income W2 academic job in a moderate to HCOL city.

470k in tax deferred accounts (contributing 93k a year with employer match) all in index funds
60k in Roth IRA from residency
40k in rollover vanguard IRA mostly ETFs
40k in stock
50k emergency fund
30k sitting in my checking acct

Debt:
Zero consumer debt
Zero student loan debt (paid off 2 years into attending hood)
Home loan: 359k left to pay off (initially 15 year fixed at 6.75%)

Not married. No kids. No divorces.

By all metrics I’m doing pretty well. Most financial advisors say I’m in good shape. But I would like to do more. I would like to retire by 55 at the latest if I can and then pursue other ventures. I would like the FIRE approach but I haven’t been fully committed to it

Well else can I expand? More real estate? I would love to get involved with a surgery or infusion center but don’t have may contacts in that space. Real estate syndicates seem shady to me.

Thoughts?

We are staying at WBR in a few weeks. We have several days of beach time all over the island. Would you recommend going to the snorkel store (or elsewhere) for rentals for chairs/umbrellas/snorkel gear for the whole trip? Is it cheaper to buy it from Costco and donate it at the end? Or do we pay the hotel? How expensive? Thank you for the advice!
