Is driving 340 a terrible idea?

Looking for some advice! My husband and I are going to Maui for the first time in a couple weeks for our honeymoon. We had planned a day where we drove from our hotel in Wailea to the Waihee Ridge Trailhead, hiked that trail, and then drove north on 340 to get to the Olivine Pools and Nakalele Blowhole and continue to Kaanapali from there.

But now I’m seeing others say that 340 is the scariest road in Maui, and I’m not sure whether this is a good idea!! I’ll be the driver, and while I’m fine with hairpin turns, I’m not thrilled about cliffs… Anyone have advice??

Maui Baby Travel Tips? Visiting with Our 3 Month Old

Hi everyone! Looking for advice/recommendations for visiting Maui with a 3 month old baby 😊
My husband and I are planning a trip for the end of September as our first little getaway postpartum since we didn’t get to do a babymoon during pregnancy. We want something relaxing, beautiful, and baby friendly while still feeling like a vacation for us too.

Would love recommendations on:
• Best area to stay in Maui with an infant (Wailea? Kaanapali? Somewhere quieter?)
• Hotel/resort recommendations that are baby friendly but still feel nice/luxury-ish
• Whether we should bring our own car seat and stroller or rent them there
• Any must-have baby travel items for Hawaii
• General tips for flying/traveling with a 3 month old

We’re hoping for a slower paced trip with good food, beach access, and easy convenience since this will be our first time traveling with a baby. Also open to hearing anything you wish you knew before doing Hawaii with an infant!
Thank you so much 🤍

Honeymoon Itinerary Review

Hello, my lovely wife and I will be going to Maui for the first time for our honeymoon. Typically when we travel we cram a lot in, but after the chaos of planning a wedding for a year and a half, we want to go to Maui to mostly relax by the beach or pool, get massages, etc.

We'll be going in June and were wondering if some kind souls could critique our itinerary and if there are stronger suggestions for restaurants or any low-effort activity. please note that we are not renting a car (we don't love driving). We don't have too many lunch plans planned out, mostly figure we can pick something up near the hotel, but please let us know if there are alternative suggestions.

Dinner: Japengo

Day 2
Haleakalā Sunrise Skyline Tour
Dinner: Monkeypod

Is renting a car basically required for Maui?

I am planning my first Maui trip and trying to figure out transportation before booking everything. From what I have seen so far, it seems like having a car makes things way easier, especially for beaches, food spots, and exploring different parts of the island. I am curious how manageable it actually is without one if you mostly stay near one area. People who have visited recently, would you consider a rental car essential there?

Road to Hana plan - dumb idea?

Hi all. My wife and I are on our honeymoon and she’d love to see the black sand beach at Waiʻānapanapa. Sadly, due to our poor planning I could only get a 7 am Friday reservation, and we’re staying in Wailea. Our thought was to get up very very early and drive the road to Hana without stopping - get to Hana and the beach to spend some time there, and then drive the Road to (from?) Hana back and make our desired stops on the return trip. Seems to make sense to me but im not sure if there’s logistical issues I’d be missing.

We cannot rent a cabin in Hana overnight at this time.

Reservations for restaurants or activities

Aloha, first time coming to Maui in June what is everyone's experience for a family of 4 to need to plan out reservations for food and activities for kids (non beach)

Are there any worthy reservations we should consider?

We will have a car. It's a jeep but we aren't four wheeler adventurers if that makes sense, just wanted the experience.

Best luau with fire dancers?

Hoping for suggestions for a luau with fire dancers. Traveling as a family of 3 with a 6 year old who is obsessed with Hawaiian culture. While we understand they’re pricey, we’d like to take her to a luau experience and want to ensure the show is amazing.

First visit to Maui

We're planning our first trip to Maui this coming July. It will be our anniversary and we are traveling with a baby. We have our hotel booked at Andaz. We won't be able to go too far out to explore since the little one will be with us but would like recommendations on a nice dinner to reserve for our anniversary. Also any recommended activities that would be appropriate and not too far. We are staying for 5 nights. Thanks so much!

Second trip to Maui this September (staying at Andaz again) — looking for must-do experiences for a couple in our 30s

Hi everyone,

My wife and I (both around 30) are coming back to Maui this September for a week and staying at the Andaz again. We stayed there last November for our first trip to Maui and absolutely loved it so much that we had to come back.

Last year we did the Road to Hana - don’t want to spend another full day doing it again this trip. One thing we missed that we are definitely planning to do this time is sunset at Haleakalā — we’ve heard amazing things and don’t want to miss it again.

We also did a sunset boat tour last year and loved being out on the water, so we’d definitely be interested in another boat-related activity if there’s something you highly recommend.

Mainly, we’re looking for ideas so we don’t end up just sitting at the pool every day. We love good food, relaxing vibes, scenic experiences, and anything that feels unique to Maui.

What are your favorite things to do on a second trip to Maui that aren’t the typical first-timer activities? Any hidden gems, favorite excursions, restaurants, beaches, hikes, boat tours, or day trips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Condo on Maui recommendations

Three adults traveling to Maui, mid September through October 1 are our flexible dates. and this is our first visit. Budget is about 5000 for one week. Here are our must haves: two bedroom with full kitchen, beachfront, unobstructed ocean views, pool and the ability to walk out of the condo and jump in the ocean. We are all strong swimmers in general, but not necessarily experienced ocean swimmers. But we will also be cautious and careful. I looked extensively at the Mahana
but it seems like beach in front of the resort is not the best for swimming. We will definitely be taking excursions to snorkel, etc. But easy access to a swimmable beach is a priority. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. Much appreciated.

Kaanapali Alii

We’re getting married in Maui later this year. We are staying at Kaanapali Alii. While we’ve been to Maui before, this is a new spot for us.

I am looking for input (and photos) of the grounds. We’re deciding if we will do our first look here.

Honua Kai - Polarizing Reviews

I'm looking to get some clarity on how things are at the Honua Kai. Half the reviews online seem great and it looks like an awesome place for families. But there is a significant number of reviews that mention serious concerns ranging from cockroaches to broken water heaters and air conditioners to construction on the pools and just poor quality service. A few negative reviews are always to be expected, but by comparison the Westin next door has much fewer negative reviews (although it also costs 2x)

I know the resort is a mix of rentals and "hotel" rooms run by outrigger, so I don't know if it just is totally up to chance on if you get a good unit or not or if there is more substance to the negative reviews.

We're booked for a week at the end of June, but I am stressing out about taking my family and pregnant wife and finding a room with cockroaches.

Has anyone been there recently and can attest the state of things?

I appreciate any input you have. Thank you!

One of the best sunset views on Maui isn’t actually from the beach

Captured this offshore near Māʻalaea Bay looking toward the West Maui mountains during golden hour.

If you’re visiting Maui and want a different perspective of the island, sunset sails around Māʻalaea can be surprisingly beautiful — especially when the mountains start catching the last light of the day. The coastline looks completely different from the water.

This was one of those evenings where the ocean stayed calm just long enough for the light and clouds to line up perfectly.

2 Nights in Hana best course of action?

My family will be visiting at the end of June, staying with extended family in a condo in Lahaina. My little family will be doing the RTH and staying overnight 2 nights in the middle of the condo reservation. We want to do Pipiwai trail in Haleakala and Wai'anapanapa State Park. While researching I also saw the Ono Organic Farms does private tours and I'm wondering if any one else has done this particular farm tour and any feedback there might be. What's the best plan of attack for 2 nights in Hana? Do we drive straight to Pipiwai on day one and knock that out first and then black sand beach morning 2? Thanks for any help!

Edit to Add: I should also mention by "little" I mean size of my family (4). Kids are late elementary/middle school aged.

May 21 - May 25 2026 storm rain weather - visit or not?

Hi all,

We’re planning a trip to Maui - first time there - from 5/21 - 5/25 for the May long weekend. I read that there was some tropical weather storm formation last weekend and there’s currently a flood warning issued across multiple islands.

I want to ask how safe it would be to visit Maui during those dates? And also based on the local weather updates - is it expected to rain there all the time this week through the weekend?

Need some help since we’re very confused if we should go ahead with the trip or postpone it for better weather?

Thanks

Road to Hana this week - worried about the rain

We have never been to Hawaii or Maui and we would like to do the RTH. We’re worried about the forecast for the next week. Can we still do the RTH or should we pass this time?

6 Day Itinerary Help

Hello!

I'm visiting Maui in about 2 weeks, for 6 days. Specifically will be staying in/near Kihei

I have a bunch of questions so I'll just list them here:

We have access to a kitchen and I'd love to keep most of the eating local/native plant and animal based. Are there recommended markets that sell fresh produce?

What are the top fruits I should try on Maui? I've seen a fruit bowl cart, is that a good way to try it?

Also would take any other food recs, specifically for Hawaiian food, both Americanized and native, shave ice spots, and poke spots.

Been into tree/plant identification recently, if there are resources for plants and animals on Maui specifically, point me in that direction.

Finally, Ive found a volunteer website called "hands on Maui" that lists some volunteer opportunities while I'm there...is that...an ok thing for tourists to do? Figured I could help in some capacity, or at the very least volunteer some photography for any organizations that are having volunteer events.

All thoughts welcome. I'm not much of a flyer so wish me luck 🤞
