Dropouts during capture are driving me crazy and I don’t know what to do

I have about 60 HDV tapes I originally recorded on an HDR-HC3 between 2006-2011. That camera is no longer functioning (door does not want to close and load a tape, seems to be a common issue) so I have an HDR-HC7 I got on eBay specifically to transfer all my tapes via FireWire.

I am of course prioritizing HDV right now since only HDV camcorders can play HDV tapes. I do have about 4x as many standard Mini DVs recorded from 1999-2006 which I will get to afterwards, but those I can capture using anything, if this HDR-HC7 is to stop working for whatever reason. regular old miniDV camcorders are much cheaper and easier to find. So I’m not too worried about those. I’ll get to them eventually.

It seems that whenever I start a capture (using HDVsplit) I can’t go more than 2 or 3 minutes without getting dropped frames/packets. It will glitch out and freeze for a split second. Unfortunately this happens in random spots, never in the same place twice. So it’s a little harder to track down what may be the issue.

It’s not just in the FireWire stream, these dropped frames are also noticeable on the camcorder screen or HDMI output.

Ideally I want to be able to get one clean transfer of each tape; but I can’t even get more than a few minutes into one without encountering issues. Not sure what I can do at this point!

SL-5800 with some issues… next steps? Anyone that can work on them? (NY/LI area preferred, but willing to ship if necessary)

About a decade ago I came across a very nice looking SL-5800 that unfortunately didn’t work. Gorgeous piece of kit though. And a real beast of a machine. I figured it was just belt issues, ordered a belt kit (from Australia! More on this later) and it kinda sat in my basement as a project for a rainy day.

That came this week. I had a look at it and tore down the unit pretty far, following along with a guide on YouTube. I found that the belt kit I ordered did not include several of the belts I needed, and had several that didn’t seem to match anything in my unit at all - turns out the Australian belt kit may have been for a PAL variant of the machine.

Well anyway, I replaced what belts I could, but it didn’t seem to help much. Machine loads tape (occasionally a little sluggish) however play, fast forward, and rewind all do absolutely nothing. It seems as if the motor driving the capstan may be seized. I couldn’t detect any movement out of it. I honestly couldn’t tell any issues with the machine aside from that.

I think I’ve reached the limits of my abilities with the machine so I put it back together and put it away in the basement again. I’d really like to see it running again though - and possibly even tap it for archival RF capture of beta tapes, eventually.

Is there anyone you can recommend to have a look at this unit and see what may be up with it?

[For Sale] Miles Davis “Birth of The Blue” Analogue Productions numbered limited edition BLUE colored vinyl

Two buyers contacted me about this last week and both stopped responding, really not sure what happened there! Making this available again.

New and still in the original outer bag, opened and visually inspected, but still unplayed. Mint, new condition.

The translucent blue vinyl looks stunning, especially with that red Columbia label.

Jacket is foil stamped on the back 000064, making this one of the lowest numbers out of the 1000 limited numbered copies.

$110 shipped. This is by far the lowest priced copy of this limited pressing available anywhere online!!

Will ship in the original heavy duty Acoustic Sounds mailer as well. Free shipping within the US! Will ship internationally if we can discuss the shipping costs first. PayPal preferred. Thanks!

Incredibly rare, not even currently documented on Discogs. I believe less than 20 of these were pressed. Michael Fremer has one, I have another aside from the one I’m listing for sale. I presume Michael Hobson kept a few? Maybe Chad got some? There aren’t many to go around! You are unlikely to see this ever again.

This was a test for a 78rpm series that was deemed commercially unviable. Just in case 45 RPM wasn’t extreme enough! I’ve never been shy about my desire for 78rpm reissues to be a thing, but apparently that is a step too far for everyone but me. This is a single sided RTI test pressing containing the “Wedding Of Kije” excerpt from Lieutenant Kije, the 1958 Reiner recording on RCA Living Stereo. The white RTI test pressing label is stamped and dated with the same identifying info that can be found stamped on the white jacket.

This is a rare example of a recording you can demonstrate or compare on Grundman cut 33, 45, 78, CD, SACD, and 15IPS (Ultra Tape) 2 track reel to reel. I’m not aware of any other recordings that can be demonstrated on so many formats.

This is a serious demo disc that reminds me of the Telarc 1812 in some ways and will definitely torture test many aspects of your system.

Don’t let the 78rpm scare you. This is not an antique hissy 10” shellac disc like you might have in mind. This is a modern microgroove cut analog stereo 12” vinyl pressing. And basically the only example of such a thing that exists, it is very unique in that regard. Basically, like your high end audiophile 45 rpm reissues. But faster. If you have a modern turntable that can do 78 like one of the newer Technics, you are already set to play it back and have a very unique audio experience.

Hardly played, I spun it exactly once while I owned it. I would say it is NM however as is often the case with test pressings I would not expect 100% perfect “tape silent” surfaces - it is as it was pressed.

$90 shipped (within US, international buyers are welcome but we will have to talk shipping costs) I may also list this elsewhere online but will be marked as sold here whenever/wherever it is sold.

PayPal preferred but other payment methods available if necessary. Thanks!

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (2006 40th anniversary stereo/mono colored vinyl 2LP) - Played/handled sparingly, I will very conservatively grade it as VG+. Not because there are any flaws or damage on visual inspection, but due to the typical 2006 pressing quality just not known for playing absolutely silently even when new. I honestly think it plays quite a bit better than a VG+ from what I remember, but It hasn’t been on my turntable since I got the DCC.

$40 shipped

I will gladly ship anything internationally - but we’re gonna have to figure out the costs.

Payment via PayPal is preferred. other methods can be worked out if necessary.

Don’t be afraid to make offers on anything you’re interested in! Please message me with ANY questions you may have. Thanks!
