Machine-gun-wielding ninjas against corporations... and demons. Shadow Warrior Review

Shadow Warrior is a shining example of the boomer shooters released in the late 90s. It represented the pinnacle of the Build engine's evolution, combining the proven foundation of Duke Nukem 3D with new technologies that pushed the boundaries of what was possible in 2.5D shooters, emphasizing complex, multi-story, and interactive levels. Shadow Warrior was the last significant game released with this technology and format.

"You should kill all business associate."

The plot of Shadow Warrior is presented... well, it's not presented. The game has virtually no cinematics or text explanations. Google, however, says that explanations are provided during loading times between levels. On modern machines, Shadow Warrior loads so quickly that I didn't even notice there were any loading screens. So, I turned to the internet to find out the plot. The protagonist, Lo Wang, worked as a bodyguard for the powerful corporation Zilla Enterprises. When he learns that the company's boss (Master Zilla) has made a deal with demons from the Dark World to seize power, Wang quits. Zilla sends monsters after him and kills the hero's old mentor—after which Lo Wang declares war on the corporation and the demons.

Expectations

Reality

"That's no ordinary wang"

Lo Wang is your typical dad, only with an сheap-ass AliExpress katana. He punches, shoots, and makes cringe-worthy jokes. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I find these jokes amusing. 3D Realms didn't deliver story-driven cinematics, but at least they voiced the main character. Throughout your quest for revenge, you'll hear the voice of an old Japanese man with an accent, although the art will create a completely different impression. Nevertheless, the character has personality and a distinct look. He's not quite up to Duke Nukem, but he's still a credit.

"Man trapped in pantry has ass in jam"

In Shadow Warrior, each level is a hodgepodge of "rooms" of varying degrees of interest. All of them, of course, are united by a single theme: Japan. You'll be able to kill demons both in the city and in the mountains and forests, but I can't say I remembered even a couple of locations. All the levels are bland, uninspired, and, most importantly, confusing. I had to consult guides more times than I would have liked. In the levels, you not only have to find your way around but also collect keys, which are hidden in the best traditions of classic Doom. One of the unlocking devices was hidden in a toilet behind a false door, which (to me personally) wasn't obvious. In one level, you had to shoot a tank at a wall six times (yes, there are vehicles here too). I don't know why they had to confuse players like that, but apparently it's a busido.

Ooops, wrong door

"Having sex is like playing bridge, If you don't have a good partner, you better have a good hand."

Talking about the shooting, I'll say that if you've played even one similar game, it's as if you've played them all. The main differences here are the somewhat useful close-combat weapons and the varied weaponry. The katana kills faster than almost all firearms. There are plenty of weapons, all of which have received alternate fire, as well as grenades and the typical additional power-ups. My main weapons for eliminating demonic corporations were dual Uzis and a shotgun. Shadow Warrior also features vehicles, which allow you to eliminate enemies much faster. Every level you encounter a tank or a boat with a machine gun, which adds a bit of variety to your everyday shooting.

"There is much death in future"

You have to shoot not only at shirtless Oni with guns, but also at all sorts of gorillas, hornets, girls in harnesses with crossbows, and their variations. Fortunately, our Japanese hero is open-minded and shoots everyone with great relish. There aren't many enemies here, but they are more deadly than you might initially think. Kamikazes will easily knock off more than half your health, and a large crowd will shoot you down in the blink of an eye. The most vile enemies are the schizophrenic hornets, who sometimes want to sting you, then fly to the other side of the room. However, there's no problem a rocket launcher can't solve.

"Whoa, must be American made!"

There are a few other shortcomings in the game that caught my eye. No matter how much I play, I can't understand the blast radius of rocket launchers or grenades. The locations don't allow for long-range shooting, and up close you take significant damage. Another nitpick is the fall damage from short distances, which makes it feel like Lo Wang could fall to his death if he jumps off a stool. There are moments in the game that can completely ruin your progress if you fail to save. Overall, it feels like the game needed some polish.

"It is better to have loved and lost than to have loved and got syphilis."

Shadow Warrior is, for me, the worst game in this line of shooters. It's adrenaline-pumping, but not like Doom. It's steeped in Japanese atmosphere, but not as European as Blood. There are humorous moments, but Duke Nukem 3D is a cut above. So, Shadow Warrior is an extremely average game with confusing locations and a broken pacing, one that doesn't really make you want to return. It's a shame.

Blood. The best boomer shooter?

https://preview.redd.it/0owtiazflrih1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=e4c4ae957ccd5989c4b68317cdc1f90191af1426

They are all dead
They just don't know it yet

First positive
When people talk about 90s shooters, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, or Half-Life always come up. But in the shadow of this pantheon, there's one game that has significantly influenced all subsequent projects in the genre. It not only introduced voxels, alternate fire modes, advanced physics, and room generation to the public, but also a unique, previously unseen setting. That game is Blood.

A massive cult shootout in Little America (and beyond)
The story of Blood is probably one of the first games that lets you play not as a good Samaritan ready to save the world, but as an outright sadist and murderer. The protagonist, Caleb, is one of the main minions of the Chernobog cult. One day, the Demon with Slavic roots becomes disillusioned with his subordinates and kills them. Chernobog not only buried Caleb in an unmarked grave but also kidnapped his girlfriend. After an unspecified amount of time, the protagonist awakens and begins a bloody journey full of vengeance and obsession.

Chosen before Chernobog

I'm not lost, I'm just exploring
The bloody journey encompasses not only gloomy tombs and temples, but also populated buildings and settlements of an alternate America from the late 1920s. There are plenty of unusual locations. There's a train, a circus and a fair, ships in glaciers, and much more. Despite their size, the locations are fairly straightforward and don't feel confusing. It's always crystal clear where to go, what to find, and how to proceed. Shortcuts unlock as you progress, allowing you to return to previously explored areas. Each chapter represents a journey from point A to point B. Where you finish a level is where you continue in the next. Sometimes, of course, Caleb can be drawn into uncharted territory, but this doesn't ruin the immersion in the protagonist's bloody daily life.

Dark Carnival

Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, what are you?
However, you won't just be admiring the well-crafted locations and intriguing design decisions. Each location is pleasantly enhanced by the protagonist's commentary. A bloodthirsty, sociopathic maniac, Caleb not only delivers animalistic "Ha-ha-ha" and "Hee-hee-hee" after killing, but also delivers rather ironic and amusing utterances about the locations he visits and the events that unfold. The developers imbued the game with dark humor and excessive violence, which were not so common in games in the late 90s. Listening to Caleb's jokes and commentary, you inevitably become imbued with his bloodthirsty sense of humor and the dark spirit of Blood. Although, personally, I think there are sometimes woefully fewer of them than necessary. It's important to clarify that the protagonist is not the Hero. According to the developers, he's merely "evil fighting an even greater evil," so don't expect Caleb to show any compassion for the living creatures around him. Civilians are merely an obstacle to his goals.

Caleb and his best friend

Blood, Dynamite and Two Smoking Barrels
Weapons only spur you on to the next bloody showdown. Besides the typical shotguns and machine guns, there's a flare gun that will set your enemies on fire, just give it time. More exotic options include a voodoo doll, which allows you to damage specific enemies, and a flamethrower spray. Each weapon has its use and its victim. A stick of dynamite is your best friend in the game, leaving bloody remains from both zombies and more resilient opponents.

Using an air freshener for its intended purpose

What bastards!
The entire bestiary of Blood isn't limited to basic cultists with various weapons or zombies. You'll be destroying Chernobog's servants on an industrial scale, from annoying rats and toothy fish to more aggressive gargoyles and hellhounds. Each enemy has its own biome, and when entering each building, you'll have a rough idea of what you'll encounter. There's also a boss at the end of the chapter, so don't forget your guns.

\"O, what a noble mind is here o'erthrown!\"

Platelets
Blood also has some interesting mechanics. For example, health or life essence can be looted from defeated enemies. Items like jumping boots, glasses, or first aid kits can be used whenever you want, but magical effects are temporary. These include invisibility, invulnerability, and Akimbo guns. This ability allows you to fire with both hands for a while. However, don't rush too hard, as ammo runs out twice as fast, and you can easily lose your advantage. Speaking of effects, it's worth mentioning their placement throughout the level. Sometimes it feels like you should grab a buff right away if you see one, but enemy ambushes instantly punish you. If you're too careful, the usefulness of a crucial ability is wasted due to the premature death of enemies. Perhaps it's better to just run like hell, memorize the location, and pick off everyone on the fly. (They didn't put a speedometer in the remaster for nothing.)

Try to guess in the comments what it is and what bonus it gives.

I've already killed you!
Blood plays quickly and... hard. At least at first. The lack of weapons is frustrating in the early levels, but once you get into the groove, it becomes easier. However, that's not the only difficulty. The enemies are clearly gifted with the gift of foresight; otherwise, I can't explain such insane reaction speed. In keeping with the tradition of its more popular counterpart, Serious Sam, enemies are not only in front, but also above, to the left, to the right, and behind. Scattered throughout the levels are not only a large number of well-hidden secrets, but also traps. Coupled with the AI's fast reflexes (the developers still say they've never achieved this level), you'll die more than once. Save often.

Night of the Living Dead

Anemia
Blood was developed by Monolith Production and released under the wing of Atari (formerly GT Interactive) in 1997. Despite excellent reviews, the game's similarities to Doom and Duke Nukem didn't achieve the same popularity as id's creation. Its outdated visuals and gameplay likely contributed to this. In 1996, Quake was released, revolutionizing the industry and influencing all subsequent games for a generation. Quake's main feature was its full transition to 3D, something Blood couldn't boast. Nevertheless, Blood found its audience, and the game is still being modified, with add-ons and remasters released. If you enjoy Clive Barker's body horror and boomer shooters, I'd definitely give Blood a try. It might just be an unforgettable experience.

When you get to hell, tell them I sent you. You will get a group discount.

Do you agree? What do you think about Blood

Should No More Heroes be more realistic?

So, sup guys.

I recently beat three NMH games, and I really enjoyed the aesthetic of the first one. The whole concept of top killers is cool, and I like the gritty, brutal duels where you have to prove yourself a worthy warrior. NMH 2 was OK, but NMH 3 was so unrealistic that it felt a bit out of touch. I understand the concepts and ideas, but I feel the grounded atmosphere was better for the series.

WYT?

Legacy of Kain: Defiance doesn't deserve a sequel

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is a remaster of Crystal Dynamics' 2003 action adventure. Despite improved graphics and a ton of extra content, the game has aged... poorly. While Soul Reaver still plays quite nicely, the same can't be said for Defiance.

This game features a lot of backtracking and enemies. While the former is fairly straightforward (running back and forth through the same locations can get tiring), the enemy battles are a real drag. They have a lot of health and appear in groups of 3-5 literally every 10 meters. You can kill them for experience, but each level only gives you new combos of varying usefulness. I finally decided to just run through them. The developers apparently understood this could happen, so they periodically lock you in a room to test your combat skills. Unfortunately, it doesn't add to the fun.

Bugs, bugs, goddamn it, bugs (imagine a GIF with Kozlovsky). There's an incredible number of them. Crashes, texture issues, enemy freezes, cutscene freezes, clunky animations during gameplay, and a ton of minor annoyances. Perhaps these are problems with the Switch version, but honestly, I doubt it.

The Legacy of Kain series' greatest strengths are its plot and writing. The story, set in the dying world of Nosgoth, is truly gripping and intriguing in its originality. The dialogue is full of Shakespearean style (in the English version), and the entire plot unfolds poetically throughout each installment. The author's philosophical reflections on fate and fatalism are intriguing and thought-provoking. Thanks for this goes to Amy Haning, who would later write the Uncharted series about the charismatic thief.

Unfortunately, the series never reached its conclusion, even though development had begun and we can now play a vertical slice of the sequel. The sequel would have been technically based on Defiance, but the plot would have followed Kain's adventures. The game was canceled due to low sales, despite its high ratings. The demo shows that a sequel to Dark Prophecy would hardly have been anything completely new. It would have had the same engine and gameplay, the same mechanics and puzzles. The plot would have been the only significant difference. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within was released a year after Defiance and is head and shoulders above any of Crystal Dynamics' gameplay efforts; the story explored similar themes related to fate. If the game hadn't been canceled, it would have simply gone unnoticed among the competition.

The most important question is: is such a game needed now, and will it live up to its previous standards?

Amy Haning is busy with other projects (according to the info I found).

All the original voice actors (whom everyone praises more than the game itself) are already old (20 years have passed, ë).

Zoomers aren't interested in these kinds of games now, so the target audience is quite small, consisting of old-timers and nostalgic types.

Without changing the core of the game—Dark Prophecy was already outdated in 2003, and developing a new one is a plus for the budget. (Remember, Defiance's sales are low.)

I'd like to see a sequel, but I think there won't be one. The series, just like 20 years ago, will cease to exist. The old-timers reveled in nostalgia, the corporations made their money—everyone is happy, and the ending... Well, screw it. Who even remembers what happened there?

Nevertheless, it's very nice to immerse myself in gaming from the 2000s. It's clear the games were made because they wanted to make something cool, not because they needed to make money.

I recommend Soul Reaver to everyone, but Defiance is already available on YouTube for the story alone. Or Welcome to the Pirate Bay.

Bottom line: Defiance's gameplay was low quality, and the game clearly hasn't held up well. The series either needs a high-quality reboot, or Dark Prophecy should be a completely different game (like the Gothic remake).
