I’ve tried way too many AI roleplay sites, this is the one I keep coming back to

I've tried an embarrassing number of AI roleplay sites at this point. This is my hobby now. My lifes work. It will be printed on my grave.

The one I've ended up using most is RolePlaya.

It's 18+, runs as a website/PWA instead of through the app stores, and that's on purpose so they don't have to water themselves down. It feels much more geared towards ongoing roleplay than constantly starting over because your character has developed the memory of a geriatric goldfish with concussion.

The memory is probably the biggest reason I've stuck with it. It keeps long-term memories automatically, older parts of the story get summarised instead of simply disappearing, and on the higher tiers there's proper scene memory too, so characters have a much better chance of remembering who is actually in the room.

There are Worlds now too, where characters can share a setting and have actual defined relationships with each other, plus group chats, public/private folders, collaboration stuff and a ridiculous amount of other features I'm not going to turn into a shopping list because nobody deserves that.

The other thing I really like is that it feels much more personal than most AI sites. The guy running it is a character creator himself and was a PolyBuzz refugee who thought f*** this and made his own site. He's active in the Discord, and users suggest features there that sometimes just appear. One was suggested today and was live the same day.

Most AI platforms feel like shouting suggestions through the letterbox of a building you're not entirely convinced has people inside.

It's not perfect. The free tier has shorter context and the free model isn't as strong as the paid ones, and some of the better memory/scene features are subscription perks.

But I'd rather say that than pretend I've discovered AI Jesus.

Affiliate link if anyone wants to have a look:

I am an affiliate, so if you end up subscribing through that I get something from it. I considered hiding this information through an elaborate offshore financial structure and using the funds to live out my days in Monaco, but typing this sentence seemed quicker.

What ruins an otherwise good AI roleplay for you?

Mine is when a character slowly loses their personality. It can start off really well, then 30 or 40 messages later they turn into the same generic character every other bot eventually becomes.

Another one is when the AI starts deciding what my character thinks or does for me.

What instantly ruins a good RP for you?
