[ETO] IMU is NOT a Parrot (refuting the "evidence")
^(Disclaimer: I'm going to be a bit of a dick, beware.)
Welcome to the first edition of ETO (Explaining The Obvious)!
For those who don't know, yesterday our sub went through our own Conformity Gate event, the Parrot Gate, as u/R_Nelle put it.
This "theory" was shared and became wildly popular with 97% of people being positive and impressed by it: https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePieceSpoilers/comments/1uy8g1m/imu_is_a_parrot_convincing_evidence/
Only about a dozen of us (out of the hundreds who interacted) thought it was ridiculous, which is quite sad actually, and makes you reflect on how logical reasoning is dying.
So, I wanted to make this post to "show the counter argument" as u/UpUpDownDownXO asked, since I was being a Debbie Downer in the comments.
And I'm pretty sure the original "theory" that was made by a Korean was intended as a meme. But somehow yall are onboard with and loving it...
Unless this is a social experiment with everyone playing along and I'm the stupid one...
Can't believe I have to explain something on the level of "why Luffy isn't a cow", but here we go...
POINT 1: "Obvious Physical Resemblance with a Parrot"
>"Imu has red eyes and a pointy thing in his head, just like this parrot"
A random parrot with red eyes and pointy feathers doesn't mean anything. This is so weak and forced that I don't know what else to say.
>"Oda was asked if Imu has extremely pointy lips"
This doesn't even support the "theory" in any way... Oda just ignored the weird question.
>"Imu's long dress looks like a parrot's tail feathers"
This is a massive reach. The full silhouette image (the "theory" conveniently used the cropped version) proves this is nonsense, cause feathers doesn't fold accross the chair/floor like fabric.
>"The shapes around Imu's neck looks like feathers in the anime"
No it doesn't. That was an anime filler shot, its not in the manga (not canon). In fact, the manga refutes this idea, as this does not look like feathers.
POINT 2: "Stereotypical Pirate with a Parrot (Joyboy & Imu)"
>"This could be seen as Imu, a parrot, on the shoulder of Joyboy"
No it can't. The silhouette is clearly NOT in Joyboy's shoulder, its further away as indicated by the white lines separating the figures. And the markings above their heads indicate shouthing/speaking at a distance.
and I thought we all agreed that Imu looked like a dick, what happened?
And this is just dumb, sorry
POINT 3: "Imu's Room Resemblance of a Bird Cage"
No it doesn't. Once again, the "theory" used an anime filler scene shot that is not supported by the canon manga, which has the inner design just look like normal tall windows.
>"Doflamingo is a subtle shadowing/preview. Doflangmino would be Imu, the birdcage is the red line, the false history of king riku would be the fabricated history by the world government, the way Doflamingo controls people with srings could be a metaphor for how Imu controls the whole world"
This is just using the existing parallel to force a connection that makes no sense, as shown above, and has nothing to do with Imu being a parrot.
POINT 4: "Ties with Shakespeare's play Othello & Disney Aladdin"
>"Imu's Domi Reversi is based on Othello. Othello's play has a character named Iago, and Disney has a parrot called Iago. Luffy also has a Genie form"
Domi Reversi is indeed inspired by Othello, but jumping from the board game to Shakespeare, to Disney, to Aladdin, to a parrot is just stretching (pun not intended).
There's at least a six degree separation here, not a foreshadowing. And I'm Oda's great great cousin.
POINT 5: "Scene of Imu with a Strawhat"
>"There was a theory that the strawhat was huge, but if Imu is a small parrot, this illustration of a relatively large strawhat would make perfect sense"
The bounty posters Imu is holding are human-sized. We have no reason or proof that they print those in various sizes.
Also, a parrot does not have arms.
Since the "theory" claims Imu is in parrot form here, either he has to be full parrot or a hybrid, which doesn't fit his canon "Devil Fruit" at all.
POINT 6: "Nefertari D. Lililth"
>"There is a flower called Impatiens psittacina, also known as Princess Lily and Parrot Flower"
The name of the flower is actually Alstroemeria Psittacina.
But yeah, this is actually the only part of the "theory" that can somehow make sense if you stretch to think of Lili as a "Princess Lily" and that it could connect her to a parrot...
None of this has anything to do with Imu though.

Yes, he does...
Like a parrot would look at Lili, am I right?
>"Imu says ‘Imu wa’ in third person because he's copying Lili"
This isn't even true...
"Mu" is the pronoun and "Wa" is the topic marker.
POINT 7: "Recurring Animal Theme"
>"Crocodile, flamingo, snake, shark, bat, hawk, bear... One Piece has many animal-themed characters, and Luffy is associated with a monkey. Since parrots are iconic pirate companions, Imu being one would make sense"
One Piece has animal names and themes literally everywhere. And even if his theme animal was a parrot, that wouldn't make him a literal parrot, just like Luffy isn't a literal monkey, and Zoro isn't a literal tiger.
POINT 8: "Imu living at the top of the red line"
>"The Red Line could be compared to the earth's equator, since it divides the first half of the grand line from the new world. And parrots live in equatorial rainforests or regions near the equator"
The Grand Line also divides the world. And we have South Birds (basically parrots) living in the Grand Line, not on the Red Line.
POINT 9: "Symbol of World Government resembles a toy for Parrots (perhaps a metaphor to the World Government being Imu's Toy?)"
It sort of resembles one specific toy because both have a center with four circles around it. That's just a basic shape that can de found in other toys, like a four-arm fidget spinner (which would then be a metaphor as to how Imu is like a child playing with the world, right?).
And even if the World Government being Imu's "toy" is the metaphor, that still doesn't mean Imu is a parrot.
POINT 10: "Popol Vuh Ancient Myth (Imu = Vucub Caquix the demon bird that declared himself as the god of sun and moon)"
>"Vucub Caquix was a demon macaw who falsely claimed to be the sun and moon, until the Hero Twins shot him with a blowgun. This could foreshadow the Straw Hats defeating Imu and Usopp landing the final blow and the twins become the true gods of the sun and the moon"
This is a myth that Oda could have drawed inspiration from, but the parallels are just being forced.
Nothing we've seen actually indicates Imu is a bird, and he's never claimed to be the god of the sun and moon. There are not hero twins in One Piece, and even if Usopp was one of them, there's no reason to believe he would become a god of the moon or give the final shot on Imu.
CONCLUSION
There's nothing here. This "theory" starts already believing that Imu is a parrot and then tries to works backwards, taking every vague connection, shape, name, reference, forced parallels and treating them as evidence.
There's one or two weak connections here and there that can be real inspiration, but none of them actually point to Imu being a parrot.
Not to mention that this "theory" was created a long time ago, before Imu's true form was revealed:

It's that time of the year again where we update the bounties & rewards.
Unfortunately, not everyone sticks around the sub, and those who haven't been around in the last 6 months (or more) have been purged! 💀
If by any chance you were one of them and no longer have a bounty, you can request again!

What Are "Bounties & Rewards"?
For those wondering what on earth I'm talking about, let me explain...
Our subreddit has unique flairs you can choose to appear next to or under your username.
In order to get one of those, you can request by picking one of the 2 available User Flairs:
- (Pirate) I Want A Bounty Too!
- (Marine) I Want A Reward Too!
If you choose one of those, you'll be requesting a Bounty or a Reward to be put on your head, which will be manually calculated and assigned (when I'm available).
How to request one:
- Desktop: You need to go to the USER FLAIR section that is below our sub's description and pick which you want.
- Mobile: Go to the sub's front page and then click on the . . . in the banner and then Change user flair.
If you don't know how to do that, you can just ask for them below in the comments and I'll get to it when I have time. You can tag me to make sure I don't miss it.
How Does It Work?
In order to calculate an unique and fair number for everyone, I created a Super Secret Equation, which gives out a number that I use to assign the closest equivalent from the bounty/reward list which contains all the canon values from One Piece.
The bounties are pretty self explanatory, but the rewards are based on the Cross Guild system, where each ⭐ is worth about 100 Million Berries and each 👑 is worth 1 Billion Berries.
As for how exactly that number is calculated... That's a secret!
There are many factors included, but if you want a hint at some of them, Roger already spoiled decades ago:
If you start with a low amount, you'll have time to hang around and increase your bounty/reward for the next update. It happens twice a year, or once every 6 months. Next time should be around January 1st.
