A S4E11 Analysis

Although the latest episode was phenomenal, there are just so many hidden details that elevate it to the next level for me, and I'd love to share everything I thought with you guys.

First of all, I could go on and on about the previous episodes too, but one key detail I'd like to point out is how consistent Tappei's characterization of an average human (Natsuki Subaru) is. If you look at Arc 3, Subaru kept dying the most traumatizing, brutal deaths, and at the end of it all, he tried to run away from everything for good. In Arc 6, he dies brutal deaths falling down the stairs and tries to run away again. Both times, he's stopped (Rem and some mysterious force). Cinematic parallels people.

Now, onto the main episode. This episode was a culmination of SO much. Emilia finally confessing her love to Subaru, Subaru finally accepting himself and who he has to be, Subaru overcoming his Meili hallucinations. But most important of all are the parallels.

-Emilia asked for Subaru's name, just as Subaru asked hers in the loothouse in Arc 1.

-Subaru reached for and held Emilia as everything was at the verge of death, just as Subaru had held Emilia's hand back in the loothouse, dying.

-And the most important of all. If you'll notice, this singular interaction with Emilia is the combination of pivotal points in Arcs 1 and 3 ; what kept Subaru going in the first place.

Arc 1 Subaru did it all because he loved Emilia, and Arc 3 Subaru was saved by Rem. However, when Subaru lost his memories, he didn't have someone he loved and he kept doing what he was doing in Arc 3. But instead of Rem saving him, it was Emilia this time. But that isn't enough. Countless people have saved and protected Subaru over and over in all of these loops, as he writhed in confusion. If that would've been enough to restore the light to his eyes, why didn't it?

Because he didn't have a purpose. He had a purpose before, because he loved Emilia. But now that he finds out such a beautiful girl loves him, someone completely out of his league, he knows why she's doing all this for him. Why she's going out of her way. For once, he has answers on why everyone loves Natsuki Subaru so much. And the one answer to start with is that this girl loves him.

From there, just as he had built up people around him before he'd lost his memories, he can look other people in the eye once again. Beatrice, Julius, 'Echidna'. Folks...

Subaru proclaiming "My name is Natsuki Subaru" isn't an introduction. It's a rekindling of what made him the person he is in the first place. A purpose to live for, and people to save him. Virtually, this can be applied even to us human beings. Think of our fleeting lives as paper planes. We can fly our paper plane in a straight line (no purpose) until it falls (death), yes. We can also fly our paper plane in a unique pattern, give it all sorts of wacky designs and mechanisms (a life with purpose), and it will still eventually fall (die). But one journey is more interesting than the other, yes?

Arc 6 is not a story about surviving and continuing to live, while also making sure others stay alive no matter what. "Stay Alive" doesn't mean keep breathing. Just like Subaru was, you can be completely dead even if you're breathing. "Stay Alive" means you don't survive. You LIVE. That is what Arc 6 is about.

Genshin players trying to act like their "No X mechanic? ZERO damage" stygian onslaught is as equally bad as HSR's "No X character? -2 cycles!"
