Switch to old Tesla to save money?
I usually rent a car on a monthly basis, and with gas prices getting pretty crazy lately, I’ve been debating whether it makes sense to rent a Tesla Model 3 SR from Hertz instead of a gas car.
The Tesla would cost me around $1100/month, but most of the Hertz Teslas I’ve seen are older high-mileage units (150k+ km), so I’m a bit concerned about battery health and reduced range.
My other option is something like a newer Mercedes CLA 250 for around $1000/month.
A few things about my situation:
- I commute about 70 km daily for work
- I live in North York and work around Mississauga
- I do not have access to a Level 2 charger at home
- I’d basically have to rely on Supercharging all the time
- Supercharger rates seem to be around $0.40–$0.60/kWh lately
So I’m trying to figure out:
- Would the Tesla actually save me money overall compared to a gas luxury sedan?
- How bad is it living with only Supercharging for daily commuting?
- Are the older Hertz Teslas still worth renting with that kind of mileage?
- Does anyone know of any cheaper or free charging spots around North York/Mississauga?
Would love to hear from anyone who has done something similar or rented Teslas long-term.
