If the Byzantine Empire survived into the future it would just be warhammer lore

Particularly the Benedictine school and others like it. I’m reading Kevin Madigans “Medieval Christianity” and he says in a few places that the “rules” of many monastic orders (like Benedict) were aimed primarily at saving the souls of the monks themselves. So did they think that god wanted every single human to live in a monastery and just do monk stuff all day? What about all the work that needs to get done in order for society (and in turn monasteries) to function? I mean, these people weren’t stupid, they spent hours and hours every day reading and studying so surely it must have occurred to them that not everyone can be a monk. Whats the big idea?
Idk why they think he sniffs paint or whatever.
Most high medieval art that I see of warfare will show an armored combatant getting his head split almost completely in half by a two-edged sword (even when wearing a great helm or chain mail coif) from an overhead, vertical strike.
This seems highly impractical to me. I would think that swords like that were more used for stabbing into gaps of the armor, not just splitting a dudes head in half straight through the helmet.
My question is: why are these depictions so common? Is this really how swords were used in this era? Do we have archeological finds (like skeletons or old armor etc) corroborating this sort of injury pattern? Or is this just an artistic cliche/embellishment?
When I use wedge formation, my cavalry has a tendency to “miss.” They seem to aim for the flag carrier of the unit instead of the center of the formation, so either they won’t hit the enemy whatsoever, or impotently scrape up on the side of them. But when I send them charging in regular formation, they completely disrupt their cohesion and kill way more units.
Is there a better way to utilize wedge formation? What actual bonus does it give?
