Officially Diagnosed idiopathic Epilepsy yesterday

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to introduce you to Bruce, my soul dog. He's been my shadow since the day he came home as a puppy. He's 9 years old and has had two suspected previous seizures (he had a lot of foam on his fur and around his mouth when we came home) and a confirmed seizure 06/03 and another 06/29. On 06/03 we rushed him to the ER to rule out anything metabolic with bloodwork which all came back great. We had a follow up with our regular vet and she prescribed midazolam and seizure tracking. We had our neurologist appointment on 06/30 and it was very thorough. They had time so we opted for an MRI and spinal tap. The MRI came back clear and the preliminary results from the spinal tap were clear as well, we get the official results back from the lab on Thursday. She diagnosed him with idiopathic epilepsy.

The neurologist originally wanted to prescribe Keppra but unfortunately, we work in the office during the day and would not be able to give it at 3 dose intervals, so she opted for phenobarbital to be given twice daily. We are starting his medication on Sunday because unfortunately we are going away for the 4th (We have a non-refundable Airbnb). His seizures seem to be triggered by the excitement of us coming home in the afternoons, so we are debating no longer using the garage when we come home.

We found him a new epilepsy friendly daycare to take him and his brother Tucky when we travel next because his current daycare will kick him out. He will be in the VIP suite with a bed, TV, arts & crafts, media package, 3 playtimes, and puppy icecream. They also have a vet on staff from opening until midnight.

I know we're in this for the long game, but any encouragement or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dopamine Agonists & Bipolar

Hi Everyone,

I am brand new here. I experienced some breast leaking and period irregularities, so I went into my OBGYN who decided to test my prolactin which came back high. I don't know how to read the labwork. I have a brain MRI scheduled for 07/11.

I specifically asked if my bipolar medications could cause this (Lurisidone [latuda brand name] and trazodone for sleep) and the nurse explained not usually at the high levels I'm at.

I know the first line of treatment usually involves dopamine agonists to shrink the tumor, but I don't know if I am even a candidate for that with bipolar because it does the opposite of my medication that levels me out. I've been successful on latuda since 2024 and have reached a relatively normal life and I don't want to give that up so easily.

If you have bipolar can you still be treated with dopamine agonists or do they go straight to surgery? How difficult is it to manage both medications? Any insight would be appreciated.

I know you guys will understand how much of a big deal this is. I saw my psychiatrist yesterday and I've been doing so well she wants to see me every 5 months instead of every 3 months. In February of 2024 I was put on latuda and it's been life altering in a positive way for me. It's doing ALL the heavy lifting. I did have to adjust the dose some because I experienced some hypomania but now, we've dialed it in and I've been pretty stable for about 2 years. It's been amazing not being suicidal all the time.
