Taking the YKI on 29 August and not even CLOSE to being ready

I’m going to take it, but I don’t feel prepared at all despite studying all summer. So, I’ve decided to just use it as a fact-finding mission to see what it’s all about. If I pass, great, if I don’t, I’ll know what goes on and I’ll know where to concentrate my studying for next time.

Anyone else prepping for 29 August?

I give up

Go ahead and skewer me but I give up. After 3 years of studying (I’ve completed up to the first half of Suomen Mestari 3), I still speak like absolute dog shit.

I think I’ve had it. I’m exhausted.

Anyone else ever feel like this?

Any kids of WWII vets here like me?

Every year we watch Band of Brothers, and each time I see it, I understand my father better. He was a Marine in the Pacific in WWII. I now understand his need for a peaceful home, for us to be happy kids ALL the time, and I understand his drinking. He was a jolly guy because, I think, he decided if he was lucky enough to make it home that he would be grateful every day to honor those who didn’t. He dropped dead suddenly at age 53, and I often wonder if his service contributed to his early death.

He never spoke about his time in the Pacific, but he was clearly impacted (as all vets were) by his experiences in battle.

Did your parent or relative ever speak about their experiences during battle? Can you recognize now that they were still dealing trauma? If so, I would really appreciate hearing your experiences with your WWII vet parent. I'm just now starting to see how my father was impacted by his participation in the war.

Feel free to PM me if you would prefer.

Stubb says EU should expand to 40 states, including Canada. Agree or disagree?

Stubb on expanding the EU

What do you think?

ETA: Feel free to include your opinion of Stubb himself, but I would really like to know your assessment of his proposal too.

Why We Fight

Just finished this episode. As always after every time we watch it, we are left speechless and utterly bereft. Is Germany still accountable? For me, yes. In perpetuity.

Just watched “Bastogne” again

We watch Band of Brothers each year starting Memorial Day weekend and I’ve seen the series more times than I can count. It’s always intense but “Bastogne” is just beyond description.

Has anyone taken a break from Finnish classes?

I’ve studied Finnish for 3 years, first at Turun työväenpisto and next at Salon kansalaisopisto. I am fried. I’ve listened to podcasts, gone to language cafés and tried to practice in everyday life and my conversational skills still SUCK. This summer I’m going to work with a private YKI tutor, take the test in August jist to see what it’s all about (if I pass, great, if I don’t, at least I’ll know what it’s all about).

After that, though, I want to take the fall term off. But of course I’m afraid I’ll forget everything I’ve managed to learn.

Have you taken a break? What happened?
