OG Buffy fans?

Are there any 40+ age fans here who posted on The Bronze Board, or had a geocities or angelfire account or a Live Journal? Or who went to Writercon 2005, 2006, or 2007? I am multi-character/mutli-ship fan who is in the midst of a Tony-loss angst fueled rewatch, and I would love to reminisce with fen my age.

I love that the Buffyverse still has new fans every day (ZOMG YAY!), but it makes me sad when y’all say that Xander and Angel and Cordelia looked “old” in 1998, call 27 year old Jenny Calendar “middle aged” and tell me that BtVS didn’t understand consent because it was the late 1900s, LOL. (Trust me, you’ll all understand when you check in on the Bridgerton fandom in 2049.)

Anyway — anyone who took a Buffy college course in 2003 or saw the “Once More With Feeling” interactive movie tour in 2006 wanna chat?

why i think quirky Willow is the best Willow version

she is totally relatable given in the earlier seasons she is awkward, intelligent and a little anxious. love her little rambles so much she basically reminds me of myself cause i do ramble a lot. also her self conscious humour feels really genuine. her kindness stands out a lot throughout the earlier seasons by being loyal, willingness to help her friends out and of course her compassion. she is genuinely herself also she reminds everyone of ordinary friendship and everyday life

her enthusiasm is infectious she gets really excited when talking about computers, books or learning magic and she approaches things with excitement and curiosity which represents me in a way as well also adding she is very optimistic in many ways.

last but not least you get to watch her grow and that's an amazing thing.

Theory: The Source of the Addiction

WARNING: Spoilers for S2 - S7 of Buffy and S4 of Angel.

Willow’s original reasons to learn magic were purely to help Buffy - it wasn’t that she wanted to feel powerful or superior, or for personal gain.

Giles was adamant that The Ritual of Restoration was far too dangerous for Willow to perform, as well as well beyond her skill level; he wagered even he could not complete it. He warned her that it could unleash something within her that there would be no turning back from.

In “Becoming”, she began the ritual in English to little effect. Her voice was weak and lacking confidence. But then something took over and she began speaking the original Kalderash version, seemingly something other than herself channeling through her.

I think this was the moment something awakened within Willow that led to her addiction. Up until then, only Kalderash women had performed the ritual, but Willow does not carry that ancestry. An outsider using that ritual must come with some type of cost, otherwise it would not be reserved for only a certain population of people.

My theory is the cost of restoring Angel’s soul was the corruption of Willow’s.

The effects weren’t immediate, but gradual, the first big example being in season 4 with her spell for her will to be done. This was the first violation of Willow’s own code for magic to be done for good and not self gain. Her soul is still mostly pure, however, and she is able to reign herself in, but things only snowballed from there in season 5, as Tara expressed her fear of Willow’s rise in proficiency.

I think what ultimately sealed her fate, or at least accelerated it, was the restoration of Buffy. Willow restored not only the soul, but her entire being—physical and mental, too. I imagine the small dark spot on her soul expanding. The manifestation of the evil demon/entity in episode 3 wasn’t the only price of the spell.

Her addiction and selfishness ramps up rather quickly; she is impressed and cocky with herself, which is out of character. Her spat with Giles only furthered this. Then Amy came in the picture, and Willow was primed for addiction. By Tabula Rosa she is a complete addict, only snapping out of it after hurting Dawn and driving Tara away. But the stain on her soul is too much, and Tara’s death sends her over the edge.

After her relapse, Giles brings Willow to the Coven in England who reconnect her to earth magic, and that I believe helped begin her soul’s healing process. She taps into this to also heal physically after being attacked by Gnarl.

** Angel Spoiler **

I think proof of her healing is when she goes to LA and performs the Ritual of Restoration a second time.

This time around, she doesn’t need to channel anything - Willow is the power source. Her journey through the corruption and healing of her soul made Willow worthy of performing the Ritual without side effect, just as the Kalderash women were seemingly able to do.

Anyway, can you tell I had some THC today? I’d love to hear thoughts on this - agreeing or disagreeing!

If you had to pick, Willow worst crime or choices she made personally, which moment or moments would you pick?

When she was insensitive to Buffy after she left for killing Angelus, when she cheated on Oz with Xander and they kissed more than once and then when confronted, both said how it was the last time but that only because they got caught not because they stopped. When she mind rape Tara twice after she told her how that made her feel and still did it. And when she joined with Kennedy and the others to kicked Buffy out.

A Different Reading of Willow in Triangle

People often see Willow in Triangle as a bully. She's certainly in a particularily mischievous mood.

But I want to table the turns a bit.

I am not going to talk a lot about Anya. I just want to say that when people talk about Willow's treatmen to of Anya, they forget that there is a reason Willow doesn't like her for most of the show. The first time they meet, Willow agrees to do a spell with her, but the spell shows her a version of Sunnydale where everyone she knows and loves dies. Then when she refuses to try the spell again, Anya insults her and later Anya teams up with a group of vampires that are holding the Bronze hostage and almost gets Willow killed.

But let's talk about Giles.

Willow has two spells she wants to do. She wants to make a artifical sunlight to help Buffy fight vampires and she is still working on making Amy human. To do this, she wants to steal supplies now that Giles is away.

What does this tell us? It tells us that Giles, who has just invested in this new and highly profitable buniess is not only having Willow work for free, he is also making her pay for supplies for Scooby work and for helping a young woman who turned herself into a rat.

It's often pointed out that Giles doesn't pay Buffy, but Willow and Xander also put in a lot of hours of Scooby work and they volunteer at his highly profitable shop. Can Giles really not provide Willow with the supplies she needs free of charge? How about a discount?

If I was Willow, I'd still, too. I'd still from that old miser Giles and I steal from Anya, who call me an "idiot child" after I borrowed her my chicken feet free of charge.

The Succubus Club radio show

Does anybody remember The Succubus Club online radio show? Predates podcasts (at least the term), and was hosted by friends and fans Kitty and Candy, who eventually scored many of the writers as guests. It was charming and enthusiastic and informative, and also super poignant as we got to know the hosts as individuals and experience seismic life events with them over the course of the series. I caught up with it later (I didn’t start watching the series until the first four seasons were out on DVD) but still think of it occasionally, and fondly.

Quick search yields results on Internet Archive and YouTube. Not sure if all the episodes are available. I wonder if either of them lurk here. Really special show.

If you had to pick, Xander worst crime or choices he made personally, which moment or moments would you pick?

I feel he has way too many but the one that bothered ne most were when he didn't told Buffy the real message from Willow and then when confronted about it, he brushed it off yet when Buffy or Willow had secrets, he would get so mad at them, the hypocrite. Although he was possessed, that was icky when he tried to force himself on Buffy. When he cheated on Cordy with Willow and when he left Anya at the altar.

Buffy’s decision to remove Spike’s chip

When Buffy chooses to remove Spike’s chip in S7E14, giving him a second chance at being good (despite Giles protests and concerns), Buffy justifies her decision by telling Giles to trust her.

In S7E17 (Lies My Parents Told Me), Giles and Principal Wood try to kill Spike. If the chip was repaired instead of removed, Spike would have been killed by Wood and thus not have been there to make his sacrifice in the final episode. He wouldn’t have been there to encourage Buffy when they gave up on her. Buffy’s decision was not only important for Spike, it was important for the entire mission.

This just fuels my love and awe of Buffy. There was no way she could have known that Spike would play such a big role both in the end and with Buffy herself, other than having so much trust in her intuition and in Spike. She was the only one that knew that he’d use his power for good before it even happened. She thought of him as a warrior and champion despite everything.

Season 2: Innocence l

This is my first time watching the entirety of Season 2. Last night, I finished "Innocence". I didn't expect this to happen, but I started crying when Buffy had expectations of Giles being upset with her because of Angel, but instead he's empathetic.

Buffy: You must be so disappointed in me.

Giles: No. No. No, I'm not.

Buffy: This is all my fault.

Giles: ...if it's guilt you're looking for, Buffy, I'm-I'm not your man. All you will get from me is, is my support... and my respect.

What do you think various characters' social media platform and vibe would be?

It's been long enough since Buffy aired that entire social media platforms have come and gone (either literally or in popularity), so the answer would likely depend on what website/apps were popular during a given time.

For me, here is what comes to mind when I think of various character's social media vibe. Feel free to object or add your own:

Buffy - Facebook

  • Activity: One of those people who never posts but occasionally will unexpectedly like someone's picture or status. Will occasionally click "attending" on school events she plans on attending. She only ever posted during her Homecoming Campaign, posting her poster and making statuses asking people to vote for her. These posts are immediately scrubbed from the internet upon her losing. Also is known to occasionally deactivate her account for varying spans of time.
  • Profile Pic: Does not have a profile picture (it's just the default gray figure), but if you click on her albums, her previous profile pictures are all from her time at Hemery High (cheerleading pictures, May queen pictures, etc.) At one point she *MAYBE* puts the classic picture of her, Willow, and Xander laughing on the grass, but ultimately reverts back to gray figure. Realistically she will at some point have a picture of her with Riley as her profile picture.
  • Friends: she is friends with basically every single Hemery High student in her grade + all the popular ones from other grades. She has never sent out a single friend request since leaving Hemery, but she instantly accepts friend requests from Sunndydale, resulting in an incoherent lineup of random facebook friends.

Xander - Twitter

  • Posts random thoughts
  • Posts every joke that he feels the Scoobies don't laugh at enough
  • Posts every joke that the Scoobies do laugh at sufficiently
  • Posts random phrases of wisdom
  • Posts pics of his meals
  • Very extreme range in the quality of his tweets.
  • Obscurely gets a lot of followers but makes the decision to just pretend like it isn't happening.
  • Screenshots of his tweets occasionally gets screenshotted and circulated as a meme on other websites.

Willow - 2010-2014 Tumblr and any era of Reddit

  • Tumblr for seeking out witchy communities, and expressing herself via Tumblr blog aesthetic, love poems, Dougie Houser Fan Fiction, etc.
  • Reddit for asking advice on both tech issues and spell issues.

Tara - Snapchat

  • Primarily sends goofy little snaps to Willow, and occasionally Anya or Dawn
  • Snaps things she finds aesthetically pleasing that she wants to share. Her goofy snaps are usually pictures of things that she sees during her day that are absurd, and she usually pairs it with a subtly witty caption.
  • Understated and cryptic snapchat stories. Sometimes deleted before the 24 hour window ends.

Cordelia - Instagram

  • Very curated to portray herself as lively and interesting but not messy or overly-online.
  • Typical pictures include but are not limited to: cheerleading photos (both candids during a routine and team photos), family vacation photos, photos from school dances, and photos from that day at the wharf with Xander.
  • MAYBE a mirror selfie with friends but only if her outfit is designer and stunning and the picture itself has very high aesthetic merit.
  • In her very early days of Instagram use, would post pictures from the Bronze with those classic instagram filters, but would not be caught dead doing so after freshman year. She never deletes her old pics though because she's not ashamed of doing something that was innovative and trend-setting at the time.
  • Does not view anyone's instagram stories except for guys she's dating. Never posts instagram stories unless it's for a prom/homecoming/May queen campaign.
  • She only likes pictures based on merit, not friendship.

Dawn - MySpace and TikTok

  • MySpace would have been a great place for Dawn to express herself and establish a sense of identity. She would love choosing songs for her page, etc.
  • She has definitely made silly TikTok videos with friends at school.

Anya - LinkedIn and Facebook marketplace (and probably Zillow)

  • You either see the vision or you don't.

Giles - YouTube

  • Watches academic lectures and occasionally comments on them.
  • Posted two acoustic guitar singing videos, but has probably since unlisted/privated them.

Riley - Pinterest

  • 🤠

BUFFY: Amy... Hi. (awkwardly) How've you been? AMY: Rat. You? BUFFY: Dead. AMY: Oh.

Loved these little throwaway references about Buffy's resurrection throughout S6. 😆

And another with Riley in S6:

Riley: "Got some big stories to tell you, too. If we get half a second."

Buffy: "Did you die?"

Riley: "No."

Buffy: "I'm gonna win."

Did Dawn stop being the Key after The Gift?

I'm a little fuzzy on the lore here. In Season 6, Dawn tells Spike, "If I'm the Key, I don't open anything anymore," and it got me thinking.

Was Dawn literally a key that could open the barriers between all dimensions/universes, or just one specific one that Glory needed to get home? And after The Gift, did Buffy closing the portal permanently use up the Key's power, or was Dawn technically still the Key but just never activated again? Curious if this was ever explained in the show or expanded on elsewhere.
