HIRING-Program Director, Climate & Nature, Onsite, This is a permanent, four-day-per-week (0.8 FTE) position, plus benefits. Salary range is $92,000 - $116,000.

https://houssianfoundation.applytojobs.ca/environment/49670

Program Director, Climate & Nature

hybrid
745 Thurlow Street 2150, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, V6E 0C5
full-time . July 28, 2026

Description

Four days per week (0.8 FTE) · Vancouver, BC

The Program Director, Climate & Nature is a senior member of the Foundation team, working closely with the Executive Director. The Program Director holds primary responsibility for the strategy, grantmaking, and relationships of the Foundation’s environmental portfolio — setting direction, making catalytic and often first-in grants, deepening partnerships with grantees and movement leaders, and convening partners and peer funders around shared goals. The Program Director reports to the Executive Director.

About THF

The Houssian Foundation leverages philanthropic giving, impact investing, and movement-building to promote environmental protection, gender justice, and resilient communities.

Our vision is threefold:

·      A thriving environment in British Columbia that will sustain healthy ecosystems for future generations, and the collaborative approaches needed to get there

·      Powerful, interconnected feminist movements in Canada and globally advancing gender justice through social, educational, health, and economic progress

·      Strong community-based organizations providing essential services in Vancouver, the North Shore, and the Sea-to-Sky corridor.

Responsibilities

1. Strategy & Portfolio Leadership

·      Owns the vision, direction, and ongoing refinement of THF’s Climate & Nature strategy — deepening the Foundation’s knowledge of environmental issues, climate solutions, and conservation in BC, and identifying gaps, opportunities, and emerging trends.

·      Reads a fast-changing landscape, supports a range of routes to provincial-scale impact, and identifies where a larger, more focused commitment could change a trajectory — shaping catalytic investments accordingly.

·      Contributes to Foundation-wide strategic planning alongside the Executive Director and program and operational colleagues, building on learnings from existing and legacy investments.

2. Grant Management & Portfolio Stewardship

·      Holds the Climate & Nature portfolio of grants end to end: sourcing opportunities aligned with THF’s goals, leading grant recommendations, reports, and presentations, and maintaining strong grantee relationships.

·      Brings a catalytic, first-funder orientation — backing people and ideas early, helping grant seekers assess fit, and stewarding relationships so THF’s initial support helps unlock later, larger funding from others.

·      Practices trust-based philanthropy — clear, light-touch expectation-setting that respects partners’ autonomy and adapts as relationships grow.

3. Organizational Strategy & Communications

·      Creates and delivers clear written and verbal presentations to the Board on portfolio strategy, grant recommendations, and impact.

·      Works with the Executive Director to inform and execute the Foundation’s external communications, including amplification of partner work and the Foundation’s public presence.

·      Partners with the Executive Director and team to strengthen project management, planning, and communication tools.

4. Convening & Community Engagement

·      Designs and leads convening as a core function of the portfolio — bringing grantees, peer funders, and partners together in ways that build relationships, surface shared priorities, and create value beyond the grant dollars.

·      Represents the Foundation with external audiences, prospective grant applicants, and at events hosted by grantees, funders, and partners.

·      Participates on relevant committees and collaboratives with other funders, grantees, and decision-makers to pursue collective impact and shared learning.

5. Knowledge, Learning & Evaluation

·      Builds learning and sharing into their work — capturing what the portfolio is learning and circulating it among grantees, peer funders, and the field, as well as internally.

·      Works with the Executive Director to lead a process of learning from grants, including impact reporting to the Board that frames the portfolio’s role as contribution to shared progress.

Qualifications & Skills

The Program Director will possess an understanding of and enthusiasm for the Foundation’s mission, philosophy, values, and grantmaking. Intellectually curious and practically oriented, the ideal candidate will bring a passion for climate action and nature — and the initiative, relationships, and judgment to lead a portfolio with significant autonomy.

·      Significant experience in environmental, climate, or conservation fields, with demonstrated leadership: setting strategic direction, convening and building coalitions, and stewarding relationships across sectors. A leadership role is an asset, as is experience in grant administration or philanthropic processes, but neither is required.

·      A connector and convener at heart, with deep knowledge of the networks and dynamics of BC’s environmental and climate sector and the policy context in which it operates.

·      A self-starter with strong work ethic, integrity, and follow-through — able to set priorities and manage their own workplans, build meaningful relationships and thrive in a small, collaborative team with evolving priorities.

Position: Internship
Location: Langley, BC
Wage: $21.00/hr
Type: Contract
Hours: 40/week
Term: October 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027, possibility of extension dependent on funding
Closing Date: August 31st

The BC Conservation Foundation (BCCF) is seeking applicants for internships working on the Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program for the 2027 breeding season. Interns will assist BCCF and Provincial Government staff with the daily care of endangered spotted owls at the facility located in Langley, BC, for future release into the wild.

We are currently hiring for two positions starting on October 1st, 2026 and ending June 30, 2027. In your cover letter, please indicate if you would be available for the full work term.

Duties Include:
Daily Animal Husbandry
Daily care of the owls is required to ensure each owl remains healthy and fit for breeding. Duties will include diet preparations and feeding of owls, behavioral observations, cleaning and maintenance of owl enclosures and work spaces, and the maintenance of mice and rat colonies that are bred to feed the owls. Note: euthanasia and rodent dissection duties are required. The focus for the breeding season is on owl care and monitoring. Attentive, continuous monitoring is required to identify when eggs are laid. Once eggs are secured with the utmost care, they are placed in incubators where they must be carefully monitored for accurate environmental conditions and regularly checked for development. Hatched chicks required 24-hour care to head start their growth and development prior to being returned to the adult breeding pairs. Candidates must be prepared to work a widely varied schedule, including up to 10 hour shifts, and alternating between day, evening, and overnight shifts on a regular basis.

Administrative/Research
The intern may assist with the writing of reports and funding proposals, as well as help with other administrative tasks. Research and data analysis from the breeding season is crucial for the development and updating of protocols. Further development of and participation in education programs both on and off site will be important components.

Maintenance/Construction
The intern will help staff with the ongoing maintenance of existing enclosures and facilities, including invasive species removal, grass cutting and assisting with the construction of new habitats. All required equipment training, including the use of a UTV, will be provided on site.

Field Work
After all chicks have been returned to active spotted owl nests in the late spring, the intern may participate in release activities which would require driving to remote sites, early mornings/late nights, and camping. A 4×4 vehicle is provided.

Community Outreach
The intern will assist with community outreach by attending events and delivering presentations to various age groups, both independently and with support. They will support fundraising initiatives and help with the care and handling of ambassador animals for public engagement. Additionally, the intern will aid in developing educational materials and maintaining social media presence.

Wages, Accommodation and Working Conditions

Interns will be paid $21.00/hr and be required to work rotating day, evening, and overnight shifts up to 40 hrs per week with possibility of overtime during the chick-rearing season (typically April to June). Interns are required to have independent housing off-site and transportation to the facility in Langley and to and from outreach events (mileage will be reimbursed for outreach travel). Interns are required to provide their own food and proper work clothes and boots for all weather conditions.
