Has anyone watched भ्राचा भोपळा (Bhramacha Bhopla) yet? 👀
I recently came across this revival and found the story behind the play pretty interesting.
The play was originally written by Acharya P. K. Atre and first premiered in 1935. It revolves around Kacheshwar, whose life gets thrown into chaos because of a hilarious misunderstanding. Basically, one small mix-up turns into complete chaos — classic Marathi farce.
What’s especially interesting is that the play has now returned to the stage after nearly 90 years. It’s directed by Vijay Kenkare and features actors like Sanjay Narvekar, Shubhankar Tawde, Chetana Bhat, Kanchan Prakash, Varad Chavan, Ajinkya Bhosale and Vijay Patwardhan.
From what I’ve seen, the response has been largely positive, although some people feel the comic timing doesn’t land consistently throughout. Still, the idea of bringing an Atre classic back for today’s audience is pretty cool.
Personally, I feel this natak is a pure green flag 💚 for anyone who enjoys Marathi theatre — definitely feels like a must-watch.

Hi Dosti Tutaychi Naay : RED FLAG OR GREEN FLAG?

Hi Dosti Tutaychi Nahi (HDTN) is a romantic comedy that beautifully balances laughter, emotions, and meaningful life lessons. The story follows a modern couple who help married couples work through their relationship issues. Through one such case, the play takes us on a heartfelt journey of friendship, love, marriage, and self-discovery. I won’t spoil the plot, but the way the story unfolds keeps you engaged from beginning to end.
I will say that the first half is a bit slow, and it takes some time to grab your attention. However, once the second half begins, the story becomes much more interesting and emotionally engaging. The payoff is definitely worth the wait.
What I loved the most is how naturally the play shifts between comedy and emotional moments. One scene will have the entire audience laughing, and the very next scene will leave you thinking. The humour never feels forced, and the emotional scenes carry strong messages without becoming preachy. The chemistry between the characters is wonderful, making every moment feel real and relatable.
The play also touches on important themes like self-respect, equality, women empowerment, and the importance of being heard in a relationship. It reminds us that love should always come with mutual respect and understanding. At the same time, it celebrates friendship and shows how the right people can give us the strength to make difficult decisions.
The performances by Chinmayee Surve, Sumeet Raghavan, Shubhankar Ekbote, and Amruta Bane are fantastic, with every actor fitting their role perfectly and making the story even more enjoyable.
I genuinely think HDTN is one of the best Marathi plays I’ve watched. It makes you laugh, makes you emotional, and leaves you with valuable lessons long after the curtain falls. For me, it’s a complete green flag and a must-watch if you enjoy theatre that entertains while also giving you something meaningful to take home.
