Well bad news everyone

Well everyone, our Boykin Spaniel Goose passed away today. We guess the brown recluse bite finally got him. We honestly don’t know how things turned so fast. By the end of last week he was doing great — eating everything we put in front of him, hunting around for more food, playing, and being the nosy little turd he always was.

But over the weekend he started going downhill. He quit eating, became bloated, lethargic, and just wasn’t himself anymore. We kept hoping it was just another rough patch and that he’d bounce back like he had before, but today our little buddy lost his fight.

Please watch out for brown recluse spiders, not just for yourselves but for your pets too. Nobody deserves to go through what he did. Rest easy Goose. You were loved more than you’ll ever know.

Well, since so many people asked here’s an update on goose

Well, here’s the next day update on goose. We did get him to eat some food last night quite a bit. We ended up having to kind of bribe him with some Kong liver flavor stuff because that’s his favorite thing in the world apparently a little bit of that and get him to start eating tried some duck flavored wet food. He ate a little bit of that and we ended up grinding up some of his kibble in a blender and wetting that and he licked quite a bit of that up. The downside is he did figure out how to get around his cone last night and went to town on his beanbag. So it was all kinds of red and angry this morning. But we got him to take his meds eventually. And little dude is just snoozing. But an upside is a lot of the swelling in his face has gone down since yesterday.

PSA to all dog owners watch out for spiders

Last week our 10 month old Boykin Spaniel, Goose, was bitten by a brown recluse spider right on his “bean bag” if you know what I mean. After it happened, he bit the spider and we believe he was also bitten several times in his mouth. It has been absolutely awful watching him go through this.

We’ve been back and forth to the vet multiple times over the last week. They kept him over the weekend on IV fluids and antibiotics, and they had to surgically remove dead and necrotic tissue from both his groin area and parts of his mouth. The poor little guy is still in a lot of pain and is struggling to eat and drink much.

We’ve tried everything we can think of at home — soft dog food, bone broth, syringes, turkey basters, hand feeding — just trying to get something in him to help him heal. Vet bills have already piled up more than we can really afford, but we’re doing everything we can for him because he means the world to us.

I mainly wanted to post this as a warning to other pet owners: please watch out for brown recluse spiders. I truly wouldn’t wish this on anybody. Seeing your dog hurt like this is heartbreaking.

If anyone has any tips or tricks that helped their dog eat or drink while recovering from mouth pain or surgery, I would really appreciate the advice. Please keep Goose in your thoughts while he fights through this
