Any doulas with hEDS?

Any of you guys diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome? I know I need to work on my strength but damn do I want to complain. Just getting home from an extremely long birth and my body is aching! Anyone got any good things that helped?

This was funny to me

I had a prenatal appointment with a client and we were chatting about the birth pool. Her husband told me about him at Home Depot the other day buying hoses and an older gentleman asking him why he needed a hose in the house and he explained they were planning for a home birth. (I was expecting this story to be him being judgmental lol) but this guy proceeds to tell him his friend did that years ago and that he was a chef and had a fancy sous vide and that’s how they kept the pool warm.

I feel like with birth so much has been discovered concerning tips and tricks but I’ve never heard of this and thought it was hilarious.

So anyways I’m adding sous vide to my doula package to really set myself apart as a doula in my lmao (kidding)

Wishing you all good vibes

Your most valuable tip

Hi doulas. Birth work is all about collaboration and sharing advice. One of my favorite things about birth work is that each birth I go to I feel I learn something new. I’d love to hear yours and maybe we can all learn a new little bit of advice or practical tip!

Blisters?

Maybe this is a me thing, maybe it’s an eds thing. I feel like I get blisters so easy even with precautions I have such a hard time avoiding it. Anyone else?

Edit** I wear the same broken in hokas so comfy, I wear toe socks, have great insoles. I (barely) walked the Camino de Santiago 400+ mi so I’m just like how do I still get blisters so often. I’ve really tried to toughen up my feet! I do use compede and it’s incredible.

I’ll also add I do have MCAS I get hives daily I’m curious if this has anything to do with it? I’m new to the group and just now starting to understand how so many of these things are connected. Fascinating finding other people have these similar experiences. Appreciate your input!

Young childless doulas

Hi all, just wanted to see if there are many other doulas like me. Would love to see what your community is like and how you’re valued. Or what your clients think! I haven’t really had too many issues but I’d like to hear how others experiences are and really about how many are in the group :) I am 25 and no children! Not married either but a boyfriend. Probably won’t have kids for a couple more years.

Question for IBCLCs and other!

Hey there, still waiting for approval in the IBCLC subreddit but thought I could find some luck here. I have been slowly going through lactation education training (LER) their program is fine the information is great (just hard way for me to learn but I can do it).

My biggest issue is clinical hours. My community has very few IBCLCs practicing and it’s required I do my hours with them and I need 500. LER hasn’t done the best job with getting me hooked up with preceptors or contracting with my local hospitals.

I’ve let my course lapse and unsure if I want to pay for an extension again. Does anyone know of a program they liked and felt they got good support? I know the one in San Diego is great (I’m in NorCal so it’s not ideal to move but it’s close). Just want to know if anyone is in this situation too or if there’s some better options for Pathway 2. Thanks!

Hi all. Would love any insight, advice, or thoughts. Just feel like I need to talk about this! End of last year I had a wonderful mom hire me for her due date. Healthy, second baby, and a VBAC. My first VBAC client! I learned so much in preparation. I have always been a big supported of VBAC and still am after this.

I don’t feel all the details are necessary it’s a lot to type but ultimately it lead to a transfer to the hospital due to no fetal heart tones. This was a birth center birth (birth center minutes from the hospital) this transfer was via private car (advised by the midwife) which I still do not agree with.

During labor (I try to not carry guilt as I did not know nor did I have enough education for this, nor is it my place) BUT she had sudden onset of intense contractions and very tense. I had thought everyone is different in labor (she looked like she had that “running away from contractions” body) she eventually complained of shoulder pain and had a hard time moving around or lying down.

I now know those were warning signs of uterine rupture (shoulder pain being a HUGE sign to call EMS asap). After transfer and check in an ultrasound showed baby was gone and she went in for cesarean. They saved her uterus but of course now we are dealing with the loss of her baby.

I still feel I didn’t do enough I had no words I felt if I spoke I would completely break down and I was totally in shock trying to hold it together. I am close with this client and we have seen each other many times since. I have learned so much and while I hope this never happens again I hope I am better next time.

If anyone can take anything from this please know the signs of uterine rupture and that they can present differently. I know it’s not our job to make any medical calls but this could very well happen in early labor at home when you are in your client.

Gosh, even months later it’s bothering me and I feel I still do not have closure as I did not ever see her baby. Which is okay, but it was so weird. We were all waiting for a baby and then all of a sudden she was postpartum and no baby.

Like I said I don’t know what to gain from this but would love your thoughts or perspectives.

Hi all, I plan to bus to Fisterra for the day after I get to Santiago and I’d like to go without the whole backpack. Is there safe storage available at the bus station? If so is it affordable? Thank you.

** I should add, I am taking a bus to Lisbon that night so I will be staying at the bus station if possible. So somewhere in the bus station or very close is ideal!
