Did I approach this medieval castle dialogue mix correctly?

Hi everyone! I'm currently practicing cinematic dialogue mixing in REAPER for a medieval/epic portfolio piece.

I imagined a scene with a king delivering a speech in a massive stone hall and wanted to get opinions on my signal chain and spatialization choices. Here is what I did:

Source Chain (Voice Track): Applied a ReaEQ with a high-pass filter at 120 Hz to clear out studio proximity/mud.

Spatialization (DearVR PRO): Placed the dry voice at a distance of 6 meters for initial positioning.

Reverb Send (-15 dB): Sent the dialogue to an auxiliary track running Altiverb 7 using the "Castle de Haar Main Hall - 11.6m s-s" preset to simulate the massive scale of the hall.

Reverb EQ: Added another high-pass filter inside the reverb chain set to 160 Hz to prevent the long stone reflections from getting muddy.

Does this workflow and spacing make sense for a realistic cinematic large-hall speech, or would you adjust anything in the chain?

Question about REAPER workflow: Best practices for routing dialogue to reverb sends for realistic distance/room acoustics?

Hi everyone, I’m learning audio post-production for dubbing and I’m looking for some advice on acoustic integration. I use reaper, and I have access to plugins like Altiverb 7, Chameleon Surround, Slapper 3, dear vr pro 2, and FabFilter Pro-R 2, but I’m struggling to make the voice 'sit' in the scene.

I have two main questions:

Indoor Scenes (e.g., stone castle hall, living room): Is it best practice to use a dedicated Aux/Bus track with the reverb plugin and use Sends from the dialogue track? Also, is there a rule of thumb for the Send amount? How do you balance the dry signal and the reverb to ensure the voice feels like it’s inside the room rather than 'on top' of it?

Outdoor Scenes (e.g., open field, mountain): This is where I struggle the most. Even with plugins like Slapper 3, I can’t seem to get rid of that 'studio-recorded' sound. The voice feels 'close' even when the visual distance is large. How do you handle distance and lack of reflections in outdoor environments without making it sound artificial or just 'dry'?

Any tips on routing, EQ, or specific techniques to bridge that gap would be greatly appreciated!

My 3D Magic Duel, Beginner Sound Design Showcase

Hey guys! Here is a small 3D magic duel project I made.

For the sound design, I used source material from BOOM Library - Magic Arcane Force along with Waves Submarine for the low end.

I'm still learning sound design, what do you think? Any feedback is welcome!

Beginner needs advice: How to design an audio-only medieval Viking duel scene in Reaper?

Hi everyone,

I’m pretty new to sound design and could really use some guidance on how to structure a scene. Since Portuguese is my primary language, I struggle a bit with English-only courses and tutorials, so I’m learning step-by-step on my own. (Also, as a heads-up, I am visually impaired, so I navigate everything by ear and audio tools).

The Scene:

I want to create an audio-only scene (no video/visuals) set in a vast open plain. It’s an intense 1-on-1 fight between two Viking warriors wielding axes.

My Setup & Libraries:

DAW: Reaper

Libraries (Boom Library - Construction Kits & Designed):

Medieval Melee

Medieval Weapons

Cinematic Metal & Cinematic Metal Titan

Violent Combat (Designed)

Drums/Percussion: Heavyocity Damage 2

My Questions:

1.

Since there is no video, how should I approach building this scene in Reaper? Is it just a matter of dragging sounds onto the timeline, or is there a better workflow for layering/panning to create depth?

2.

How do I make the vast, open-field environment feel real without letting the reverb blur or muddy the impact of the axe hits?

3.

What’s the best way to layer the metallic impacts, swings, body hits, and vocal grunts so the fight feels weighty and clear?

I’d love to hear any tips, workflows, or advice you have for a beginner tackling a project like this!

Thanks in advance!

question about Best signal chain in Reaper to "fix" dialogue recorded with too much room re verb?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a fandub project in Reaper and I’m having trouble getting the dialogue to sound "dry" and professional because I recorded with the mic too far away.

I’ve already used iZotope RX Dialogue Isolate to clean the noise floor, but I’m struggling to remove the remaining room reflections and make the voice sound cohesive with the scene.

Since I can't re-record, what are the best techniques or "signal chain" tips in Reaper to fix this? I have the full FabFilter bundle, izotope RX suite, clear tone, valhala bundle and Dear Reality plugins. I'd love to know how you guys would chain these to get the voice to sit properly in the mix.

Here are the clips if you want to see what I’m dealing with:

Any advice on the chain order (EQ, Compression, De-reverb, etc.) would be a huge help!

How to get natural, cinematic outdoor dialogue in REAPER? (Accessibility & Workflow help)

Hi everyone,

I’m an audio editor currently working on audio montages, and I’m looking for advice on how to make character dialogue sound like it’s taking place in open, outdoor environments (beaches, forests, city streets, etc.) in a natural and cinematic way.

A quick note on my workflow: I am visually impaired, so I rely on plugins that are accessible via screen readers. I absolutely love using DearVR Pro 2 for this—it’s accessible and sounds fantastic—but it lacks the specific outdoor variety I need for some of my current projects.

Here is where I’m struggling:

The Current Issue: I purchased the BOOM Library "Fields & Spaces" impulse response (IR) pack. I’ve been trying to use these in ReaVerb within REAPER (typically on a bus with 100% wet), but the results sound a bit "off" or artificial rather than cinematic.

The Goal: I’m looking for a way to get these to sound as natural as possible, or to find a different workflow.

I would love your input on two things:

Plugin Recommendations: Are there any other accessible plugins that offer high-quality, easy-to-use outdoor presets similar to the DearVR interface?

IR Workflow: If you use BOOM Library (or other IRs) in REAPER, what is your "secret sauce" to make them sound authentic? Am I missing a key step in how I’m setting up the bus, EQ, or pre-delay?

Any tips or recommended techniques for handling outdoor dialogue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
