Parental leave payments

Hey, we’re due to have our first baby in 25 ish days and I’ve started the parental leave application. I’ve just got to income and it wants the previous tax year which has only ended a couple of days ago.

My info linked through ATO says “not tax ready” and my company also sent an email saying there was a lodging error and to hold off doing taxes as the info is getting re sent.

I’m obviously happy to wait to do my taxes but I’m not sure I can wait to do the PPL form as my husband is going to take some of his days about week 5 of the babies life.

Has anyone come across this before and did you just submit the info you had? Or is it best to wait?

We obviously can’t finish the full application without a brith certificate but I was hoping we could get pre approval if that’s a thing to make sure he can get his days in time.

Thanks in advance

New born and interstate visitors

Heya 👋 my partner’s family and my sister all live in another state and will be visiting in the first 9ish weeks of our babies life. And staying with us.

My sister is hopefully coming for the birth and she’s a healthcare worker so already has all the vaccines and is going to wear a mask on the plane. She’s also got good awareness of hand hygiene and knowing her body if she’s unwell. So I’m not as nervous about her.

My in-laws and brother in law are likely coming around the 5-7 week mark pending babies birth because my partner has parental leave and it means he can host them (which takes the pressure off just me if they were to come later on).

They’re all happy to get the whooping cough vaccine and my in-laws are quite old and immune compromised as well so I’ll suggest a mask for the plane as well.

But what other things would you suggest we do to keep the baby safe during this period. Since they can’t start most vaccines until 6 weeks.

I’m specifically looking for advice from people who have hosted interstate or internationally family in the early days and how they handled it. I’ll chat to my doctor about it too but saying absolutely no visitors staying in our house until they’re 6 months and mostly vaccinated isn’t super realistic with aging parents who might not meet them otherwise.

Video resources on safe sleep and other newborn safety things

Hey 👋 our first baby is due in the next 30 days and I would like my husband and I to get a really good grasp on the safe sleep and SIDs information before we bring our new babe home.

I’m ideally looking for some videos we could watch together as my partner is way more likely to sit and watch than read loads of content (he’s dyslexic) and ideally if we’re absorbing the same info it will make sure we approach things consistently.

I’ve read a bunch and learnt a lot from friends but I can’t really find any video content that isn’t peoples personal experience. Ideally someone who’s got a background in this space or governing body would be good but when I look at SIDs resources or even government resources there isn’t really any video content. SIDS YouTube looks to be 4+ years old.

Can someone link or point me in the right direction?

For the most part our friends have generously given us their bassinets, cots, bouncers etc. so we’ve sort of skipped the step of understanding the safety features in those product’s. So that’s my next task and I’m hoping some of the video resources we have can work for that too.

Views on being sick and going to baby stores with a mask

First week on mat leave and I’ve got a cold. Been to the GP and she said viral and rest should be good. I have a bunch of medical appts and they’ve all said to come with a mask because they don’t want me to cancel when I’m this pregnant.

But I had originally planned to go to a few baby stores to try arm chairs and my partners taken the day off as his hours don’t allow us to do this on the weekend.

I feel like if I saw someone in a mask it would make be a bit nervous and especially cause we need to sit in the chairs to test them.

Am thinking the right thing to do is not go? Even if it means we can’t order one in time for the baby - Or to take advantage of the June sales.

What’s everyone’s instant feeling to this?

Perth baby shops recommendations - rocking/reclining chairs

Hey, we want to buy an electric reclining chair as one of our only big purchases (we’ve been lucky to have so many big items given to us second hand).

I’ve had a look at some non baby specific ones and it seems the baby ones are a pretty decent price in comparison.

Looking at on of the Il Tutos likely but I want to go somewhere that has a lot of them on the floor to try.

I went to Belmont baby bunting and they have a few but not many.

I don’t mind driving if it’s a location that’s got a good range of options. Is Osborne park or Booragoon better for options? Any location or shops specifically you would recommend

Preparing our dog

I’m 33 weeks pregnant with our first and we have a nearly 4 year old lapdog cavoodle.

I’ve really made an effort to not let him climb over me pregnant (he’s the sort of dog that will sit on your chest if you let him) to get him use to when I have a baby on me… but I have let him sit on my lap a lot (cause I do love it).

But now I’m in my insomnia era and on the couch a lot through the night he’s constantly trying to be on me and won’t settle at all. Even if I put him next to me (which he would do during the day fine). He would normally sleep all through the night if I wasn’t awake. Not a good sign for the feeding hours coming my way.

What are some things you did or would recommend getting ahead of to make sure he’s still loved but doesn’t make middle of the night awake time harder than I’m sure it will be.

He’s never slept in our bed which makes that part easier but anywhere else we sit or lie down he’s had full rein. He’s also becoming a bit psychotic begging for food in the early hours of the morning because normally when we’re awake one of the first things he gets is breakfast which I’m not doing at 3/4am.

Any dog prep or specific training and conditioning I should focus on that helped you?

Or any ways to set up the house now so the boundaries are set before the baby arrives?

Preparing to be parents

We’re 33 weeks pregnant and before getting pregnant needed fertility treatment and IVF. Ahead of that process I went pretty hard with planning and budgeting to get pregnant and also have an idea of our first year with a baby and what leave we could take/ afford.

Other than now needing to update our original forecast to reflect increases, wage changes etc I really want to attempt to predict what having a kid past 12 months looks like with return to work and current living expenses.

I’m also aware that I won’t know how I feel about working and a small baby until the time comes so pending what we can afford I want to try forecast a few options.

We’ve done this very high level already but I want to attempt this with some legit figures and peoples experiences.

Childcare costs, subsidiaries, expenses you didn’t think of or you do include in your budget that I might not have? Anything you can throw at me to get me on the right track?

Also preparing a bit of a list like getting a will, reviewing insurances etc. anything else you recommend?

What things do I need to consider and add to the list?

Parental leave and salary sacrifice

Does anyone have experience with Maxxia salary sacrifice and then going on extended parental leave?

I work for a not for profit and health so it’s roughly $15k a year that I use for mortgage repayments and an entertainment card (eating out essentially).

I’m fortunate to be taking roughly ten months off with a combo of paid parental leave from work, govt, long service leave and annual leave.

The govt pay won’t be paid through work but direct by govt. The rest is through work and for me maxxia pays their part a day after work (normally).

For anyone in a similar situation what did you do with your salary sacrifice payments? Pause them completely or try make it work?

My initial reaction was to just cancel Maxxia completely because one of my colleagues had a nightmare experience and it seems too hard to try change what they need to do for four different phases of my leave. But before I do does anyone understand or know how some of these things work? What was your experience? And what should I be asking or doing with Maxxia / work?

Reclining and or rocking chairs

Hello, we’re looking for a chair that we can feed and I assume eventually sleep in from time to time. I’ve been to baby bunting but was underwhelmed.

I’m quite tall so I want a high back for head support. Ideally reclining and rocking but open to your thoughts on what you use more.

Any brand or model suggestions? Any places to look?

I’ve noticed Big W marketplace has some well priced options but not being able to sit in them feels a bit risky.

Thanks 🤩
