Aiming to improve on “Mind vs Eye” when using references. What repeat problems do you see in this hand study?

Heya, I’m trying to get better at drawing hands but more broadly training to “draw what you actually see, not what you think you see.”

Hoping others can help me spy any patterns of mistakes I keep making, and tell me if the ones I believe I’m noticing are valid.

I did this study with the ball already aligned to the reference, and marks where the fingers overlapped onto it as a guideline. I then kept a mirrored version of the photo up for reference (the text was backwards originally lol).

The fingers are definitely the best part because of that, although I’m surprised that even with them being quite accurate, I still struggled to translate the rest of the hand into place properly based on them.

I’ve been doing full body studies seperate to this as well, and I have noticed I tend to draw certain things larger than they are in reality. I think the top row of palms suffers from this.

I also admittedly was more focused on the hands than the wrists, but I don’t know quite how I managed to get such wildly different angles in some places. It’s noticeable in a lot of the angles of the palms too.

The entire time I was also fighting with my brain because I kept thinking the fingers were extremely disproportionally long. But seeing the end result now I think they’re fine?

I also thought a few of the hands, especially in the bottom two rows, seemed flat and “”mushy”” as the only way I can describe it. Like if someone had sculpted them they wouldn’t be structurally sound or have a good grip on the ball.

I think it may partially be because I was finding it difficult to add solid construction in while staying true to the reference. Perhaps a tendency to not want the hands overlapping onto the object they’re holding, because I think they shouldn’t bend or warp in the way needed to hold something, and I want to “correct” their position when they do?

FYI: Joining Reddit Pro might hide your profile by default!

Just a quick heads up to anyone else out there who's just started using Reddit Pro. I just tried it out yesterday, and unbeknownst to me it apparently changed all my profile settings to hidden! If you haven't already, do double check your "Content and activity" is still visible. It also disabled followers for me.

I'd been wondering why a recent post i'd made was doing so poorly, and after deleting it and making some changes it was still flopping. I've had issues with links to certain online shopping platforms (eg. Gumroad, Payhip) silently blocking my posts or comments before, so I checked it in an icognito tab. Yep, blocked.

However, I'd just posted a link to the exact same storefront 2 days earlier, so I also checked my profile in case something else was wrong. That's when it said my profile was hidden! I find it very unlikely that it wasn't related to me joining Reddit Pro, since I hadn't had any issues right before trying it out.

My profile and posts went back to normal once I switched everything back to public.
