If Nazi Germany had played the long game and not started invading other countries until they had developed the atom bomb, would they have easily conquered Europe and the USSR?

[Request] Thinking about the saying "that went over like a lead balloon" got me thinking. If you used the thinnest commercially available lead foil (0.4mm / 1/64"), could you make a balloon large enough that it would float when filled with He or H2, and, if so, how big would it need to be?

Lead foil is apparently available even thinner, but I'm assuming it would be difficult to get large sheets at ultra-thin gauges.

How Many Checks Do You Write Per Year?

In 1995, I wrote 160.  In 2011, my wife and I wrote 69.  Last year, we wrote only 6 – and three of those were personal loans to a friend.

Phantom Dashboard Warning Lights - 1999 XJ8

I have a 1999 XJ8 with warning lights always on but mechanics have assured me that the problems are with the warning indicators, not the underlying systems.

The red and amber generic warning lights are always on. The ABS and BRAKE idiot lights are always on. The odometer panel always shows warnings for STABILITY CONTROL and LOW OIL PRESSURE.

AI suggests the following; is this sound advice?

Jaguar electronics of this era are known to "latch" onto error codes even after a temporary glitch is gone.

  • The Fix: Disconnect the negative (black) battery terminal. Then, touch the disconnected negative cable to the positive terminal (which is still connected to the battery) for about 20 seconds.
  • Why: This drains the capacitors in the modules and forces a "hard reboot" of the car's computers, often clearing "phantom" warning lights.

Thanks.

Prior to the harnessing of electricity, were there any deleterious effects to humankind from solar flares, coronal mass ejections, etc.? (Obviously auroras were visible, but those are harmless as far as I know.)

Do languages not based on the Roman alphabet have words/terms that are based on letters, such as O-ring, I-beam, T-bone, etc.?

The title says it all. I'm wondering about languages such as Arabic, Korean, etc.

Will we someday have a law that explicitly addresses the legality of marrying androids?

This could either be a law explicitly legalizing it or explicitly declaring it illegal (even if it's by exclusion, e.g., a law defining marriage as only between two human beings.)
