This Japanese festival chant basically says: stop watching and join in

One of the most famous lines heard during Awa Odori is:

踊る阿呆に見る阿呆

同じ阿呆なら踊らにゃ損々

Odoru ahou ni miru ahou.

Onaji ahou nara odoranya son son.

A natural translation would be:

“The dancers are fools, and the watchers are fools. If we’re all fools anyway, you’re missing out if you don’t dance.”

阿呆 means “fool,” but here it is playful, not insulting.

踊らにゃ is a casual way of saying “if you don’t dance.”

損 means a loss or waste, so 踊らにゃ損 feels like “not dancing would be a waste.”

Awa Odori is held in Tokushima every August and has more than 400 years of history. I love how this chant captures the spirit of the festival: stop worrying about how you look and join in.

Would you dance or stay in the crowd?

How do you practice listening for real situations?

As a native Japanese teacher, I’ve noticed that learners can understand lesson audio but still struggle when the situation changes.

That’s why we organized Dozo’s listening practice around situations you may actually experience:

• Travel and transportation

• Food and restaurants

• Work and business

• Daily life

• Health and emergencies

• Shopping

• Friends and social situations

• Dating and relationships

You can choose situations that match your goals instead of practicing random conversations.

Dozo also has Japanese teachers you can speak with. New members can book 2 free trial lessons to discuss their goals and get guidance.

Which situation would you practice first?

Free Pocket Tissues in Japan

Japan has been putting ads on free pocket tissues for decades.

But as this video shows, plenty of people still walk right past them.

Cheap, useful, and physical. But does it actually have good ROI in 2026?

And would anyone take these outside Japan?

The hardest part of studying Japanese is deciding what to study next

I’ve been building Dozo to make that part easier.

Instead of opening several apps and wondering what to practise, your teacher can:

• Build a study plan around your level and goals

• Assign specific grammar, reading and listening tasks

• Review your work and leave feedback

• Track your study time, completed tasks and progress

The idea is simple:

Your teacher plans it. You study. Dozo tracks it.

You can try Dozo free for 30 days, including two free trial lessons with teachers inside the app:

https://nihongodozo.com/

Would you prefer a study plan created by a teacher, or the option to build your own?

Would you use real Japanese news as daily reading practice?

Textbook Japanese is useful, but eventually you need to see how the language is actually used.

We added daily Japanese news to Dozo, organized by JLPT level. Each story includes:

• Japanese reading practice

• Audio for listening practice

• Optional furigana

• English support

• Key vocabulary and discussion points

The goal is to make current stories understandable without removing all the Japanese.

Dozo includes a 30-day free trial and two trial lessons with Japanese teachers:

Every conversation with Carmen-san is full of laughter, and I absolutely love it 🇯🇵

Every conversation with Carmen-san is full of laughter, and I absolutely love it😆🇯🇵

She's such a fun conversation partner, but what makes me even happier is seeing how much effort she puts into learning. Every lesson, she's taking notes, reviewing what we've learned, and actively using vocabulary from previous lessons in our conversations. That kind of consistency really shows.

Watching her Japanese grow has been so rewarding because it has given her exactly what learning a language is meant to give us... real communication and meaningful connections with people❤️

I can't wait to welcome her back to Japan and have even more conversations together! 🇯🇵✨

If your goal is to confidently connect with people in Japanese, we'd love to help you too. Come join us at NihongoNana!🌸

Meet Andy-san!

Meet Andy-san!

Andy-san is one of the most motivated students I've ever taught, and after learning together for so long, I'm happy to say I can now call him my friend.

One thing I love about him is that he truly enjoys learning Japanese. He's visited Japan, loves having conversations, and as you'll hear in this video, our lessons aren't just about grammar or vocabulary.

We talk about culture, everyday life, and our experiences. Because I believe language isn't just something you study—it's a tool to connect with people.

Watching Andy-san grow into such a confident Japanese speaker has been incredibly rewarding, and I'm so grateful to have been part of his journey.

If you'd like to speak Japanese with confidence and join a friendly community, we'd love to welcome you to NihongoNana. Andy-san and I hope to see you in the NanaFam!

What would you love to talk about in Japanese? Let me know below!

What if your Japanese app came with a real teacher?

A lot of Japanese apps are useful until you get stuck and have no idea what to study next.

That’s one reason I built Dozo around both self-study and support from real teachers.

Your teacher can:

• Build a personalized study plan around your goals

• Track your progress over time

• Assign tasks after each lesson

• Give feedback and lesson notes

• Help with speaking, grammar, and pronunciation

• Adjust your study plan as you improve

Everything stays together, so you always know what to study next.

You can try Dozo free for 30 days, including two lessons with teachers:

Planning a date 💕

Planning a date💕

Confessing your love🫣

Breaking up💔

Yes... we're practicing all of these in Dozo Listening Practice 😆🙌

Learning Japanese shouldn't only be about textbooks and grammar drills. Real conversations are what you'll actually hear in everyday life, and that's exactly what we're practicing.

If you're getting tired of study, study, study and want to learn with practical, fun, real-life content, give Dozo a try!

Because the best way to stay motivated is to enjoy the language while learning it 🇯🇵✨
