First Experience Riding the Gakuentoshi Line in Sapporo

I visited Sapporo last month for the first time since I was a child. I really enjoyed exploring the area and was curious to see what JR Hokkaido was like after riding JR East so many times. I had a few hours free one morning and decided to ride the Gakuentoshi Line from Sapporo Station to Shinkawa and back just for the experience. The equipment is noticeably older and a bit tired looking, and the interiors looked very worn out. I had hoped to take some photos of the views along the way, but the windows were dirty and clouded from age. Nevertheless, the trains ran smoothly and on time, and I’m glad they are available for residents, commuters, and visitors.

Here are a few photos from my short trip, starting with the train arriving in Sapporo Station before heading back the other way to Shinkawa. I rode in the first car so I could take a few photos as we approached Shinkawa Station, then captured the train leaving and the next one arriving to take me back into Sapporo.

Spotted this USJ "Discover U!!!" train on the JR Osaka Loop Line tonight

It's already USJ's 25th anniversary, and I've still never been. Every time I think about the crowds, I end up giving up. 😅

A little question related to rail photography.

I know the yellow tactile blocks are for those who are blind but station announcements usually tell you to stay behind the yellow line. That being said, am I allowed to go out the yellow blocks since the warning on the sign technically says I just can't be outside the gates or do I have to stay within the yellow line?

Hakone Tozan Railway

I’ve visited family in Japan many times throughout my life but took my first trip to Hakone last month. I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to experience the beautiful scenery and amazing curves, switchbacks, and steep grades on the Hakone Tozan Railway from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora and back. What a wonderful treasure this tiny mountain railroad is. The multiple generations of passenger equipment are interesting to see also. We rode one of the newer 3100-series trains on our way up to Gora and the older 100-series for our return to Hakone-Yumoto. I caught one of the 2000-series trains departing Gora one day while we were in town for dinner. While it may be faster to travel to Gora by car, this railway experience is one that I wouldn’t want to miss.

Is there any stereotype for each Japanese railway company?

Given that there are some railway companies in Japan, I am wondering if there's any stereotypes about them.

E.g. (just example) "Keio often late" or "Tokyu's train is outdated" etc

Stopping position overruns on a line such as the Yamanote Line in Tokyo. How does the process of reversing back work?

I know that the Yamanote Line has a TASC system for stopping at stations due to the small tolerance margins, and an inching function to recover the train from an overrun (at least that's how it is in simulations). But what are the rules in the event of such an overrun?

  1. Is the train operator allowed to quickly reverse on their own if they’ve overshot the stopping position by only half a meter to one meter, or is that already too much, and are further steps required before reversing (beside informing the conductor)?
  2. Is there a difference between stations with platform doors and those without, since passengers on the platform might step very close to the train, which could make reversing dangerous?
  3. How often do these minor overruns happen on the Yamanote Line? Is it normal for a train to back up a few centimeters, or is that rather unusual?

(Sorry for so many questions, but I’m really interested in this.)

Genuinely curious about the fascination with trains

First of all, please let me clarify I am not trying to mock or belittle anyone here, I am legitimately curious about your interest in / fascination with trains (specifically Japanese trains).

I've lived in Japan for the past ten years and ride trains nearly every single day, but for me it's just public transportation. I feel no emotional or nostalgic connection to the train itself.

I am very curious to hear your stories about how you became so interested in trains.

A derailment has occurred on the Kintetsu Kyoto Line. The train involved is an 8A series model.

The cause is unknown.

75% Completion of Japan's Rail Network!

Still a lot to go, but I recently passed 75% completion on Japan's rail network! I've ridden 104 of the 191 different railway operators throughout the country (of which I've 100%ed 59 of them) and am between 70-95% in terms of track completion for each of the JRs. Overall, I've ridden 60k km on the Japanese network, or 1.5x the circumference of the Earth. Hoping to finish Shikoku next!

Japanese foamers are so rude

I am currently travelling in Japan, decided to go to Odawara to photograph Dr Yellow because it would be pretty cool to have a photo of it as a souvenir given this is pretty much a once in lifetime thing for me. Immediately there are a billion gunzels lined up at the platform with huge telephoto lenses. I ask a fella "Hey do you know which direction Dr Yellow is coming from" to which he straight up lies to me and points in the wrong direction. I figured out pretty quickly where it was actually coming from. Dr Yellow rolled in, I was mindful not to step too close to the yellow line, or get in the way of people's photos/videos. Then afterwards, same asshole comes up, kicks me in the leg, and starts swearing at me in Japanese as if I could understand. Shows me his photo - my head is partially in the way of the foreground, not even blocking the train. What a disgraceful chopped guy.

Now I understand exactly why 'Toritetsu' people are looked down upon and I have to agree with the majority. If this is you, I am very sincerely sorry my head was 5% blocking the foreground (which you can edit out using Lightroom or crop it out easily) and get a bloody grip mate. Regardless - I'm pretty happy I got to see Dr Yellow

(For those unaware - "foamer" is a colloquial term used to describe someone who "foams" from their mouth over trains - so this post is specifically targetted towards that audience)

What if the UK railways were ran by Japan Railways?

LORE:
In this universe, the government privatise the railways, but instead of adopting the awkward rail franchising model, they go “uhhh idfk let’s yolo it and give it all to JR and they’ll figure it out”. British Rail is broken up into sectors, one example being BR Eastcoast, whose branding is inspired by JR East.

Tobu 8111F

My most favorite train of Tobu Railway. Produced in 1963 and currently in service for Tobu Noda Line (Urban park line) while being owned by the Tobu museum. All 8000 series, 10030, 10050, 60000(6 cars) will seize operation from the section between Kashiwa and Funabashi after March 2027.

JR Pass vs individual tickets - help with my itinerary

Hi, I’m flying to Japan in a few days and I’m trying to figure out my transport situation and I’m a bit overwhelmed.

I’m travelling with people who already bought a JR Pass, but I had doubts about it from the beginning. I’ve also read quite a lot of posts here about the JR Pass being not worth it anymore, but I still feel a bit lost and would really appreciate some advice.

My main routes plan:

**July 2:** Narita Airport → Tokyo (probably Narita Express?)
**July 4:** 1 day trip to Nikko
**July 7:** Tokyo → Kyoto
**July 9:** 1 day trip from Kyoto to Nara
**July 10:** 1 day trip from Kyoto to Miyajimaguchi (this can be optional for me)
**July 13:** Kyoto → Tokyo
**July 15:** Tokyo → Narita Airport

And beside these I’m also going to use local transport obviously. I already added Suica to my Apple Wallet

My questions are:
\- Will buying individual tickets be cheaper with this itinerary?
\- Should I buy any local/day passes for Tokyo or Kyoto, or is Suica enough?
\- What is the easiest way to buy the tickets? I would prefer e-tickets/online booking.

Also, since the people I’m travelling with have JR Passes, it would be convenient if I could take the same trains as them, but I don’t want to pay extra for the pass if it doesn’t make sense.
