A look back at Kaepernick

Just sharing this podcast because I know there is still a lot of interest in Colin Kaepernick. I loved watching him play and it was a wild time to be a niner fan.

Bomani Jones is joined by Charles McDonald to kick off a historical retrospective series looking back at Colin Kaepernick, a decade after his initial protest. In this episode, Bo and Charles refocus the conversation on a frequently forgotten element: just how good of a football player Kaepernick truly was. They trace his trajectory from his breakout college days at Nevada running the pistol offense to being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers.123The duo breaks down Jim Harbaugh’s high-stakes mid-season decision to replace Alex Smith with Kaepernick, a move that instantly raised the team's ceiling and altered the strategic landscape of the NFL. They relive the historic, record-setting playoff game against the Green Bay Packers and explore the widespread proliferation of the zone read option across the league. Bo and Charles also analyze the subsequent challenges, front-office tension, coaching changes, and roster downgrades that defined the later years of his career. Ultimately, they evaluate his final seasons under Chip Kelly, his standing as a clear starting-caliber signal-caller, and his lasting legacy as a historically significant figure in modern football history . . .

Water supply situation. Is our host making stuff up about “the mafia?

I’m staying in a nice AirBNB west of Palermo. When we checked in he tells us this story of how he has to check the cistern frequently and we should take quick showers because “the Mafia” is doing something with the local water supply. Meantime our place has a pool, which is a bit low, but still automatically adds a little bit of water in the evening. While I respect being water conscious and we come from a place that deals with drought, this whole mafia reasoning is setting off my BS radar. Any locals here who can provide any insight of the current situation?

TLDR: Airbnb host is saying don’t waste water because “the mafia” is doing something with local water supply. I’m skeptical of his story. Still plan on not wasting water, but would like to know what’s going on locally.

Oceanside sales tax rate could hit 9.25%

If Oceanside voters approve a half-cent sales tax increase in November, AND a countywide sales tax rate hike gets approved... we will be paying 9.25%. That will put us among the highest in the entire county. With ridiculous inflation I don't know how families are supposed to get by. Seniors on fixed incomes are struggling and we are seeing more and more becoming homeless in our county. Oceanside voters just approved an extension of Measure X in 2024. For Oceanside, the new tax money just goes into the general fund. It is being sold to voters as it helps with roads, police and fire stations and more sand for our beaches, but zero promises any of that actually happens.

Supporters of a new ballot measure say we need to raise the sales tax again, this time to pay for the TJ river valley cleanup, but under the current proposal... not even a quarter of the money raised will go towards that. And county supervisors will have the final say on how the money is used. And they need to hire 11 people to monitor the money. WTF?

If passed, the measure is estimated to generate about $360 million annually, of which the county Board of Supervisors would ultimately vote on how, specifically, to allocate the funds.

According to the proposal, 22.5% would be set aside for the cross-border problem. Most of that total, or no less than 20%, would need to be spent on infrastructure and engineering projects “to stop sewage flows from Tijuana” and the rest could go toward “addressing the emergency health impacts caused by the sewage crisis, and protecting local beaches, bays, and coastal waters from toxic pollution.”
