Inherited my Dad’s Shogun Trail Breaker II. What would you do with it?

My dad bought this Shogun Trail Breaker II brand new from Earl’s Bike Shop in Omaha back in the ‘90s. If you’re from Nebraska, you probably know Earl’s—it was a legendary bike and skate shop.
My dad passed away, and I recently inherited the bike. It’s completely original as far as I can tell, and while it’s certainly not worth a fortune, it’s priceless to me.
Part of me wants to build it into a cool xbike with modern components, wider tires, and make it something I’d ride all the time.
The other part of me feels like every scratch, every worn grip, and every original part is part of my dad’s story, and I’d regret changing it.
So I’m curious…if this were your dad’s bike, what would you do?
Would you:
Preserve it and just service what’s needed?
Tastefully modernize it while keeping all the original parts?
Build it into the bike you think he’d want you to ride?
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.
