My Personal Star Wars Film Ranking
So I(17M) recently watched all of the live action star Wars films for the first time, except for Solo and Rise of Skywalker. Just wanted to share my personal subjective ranking for them. So here it is:
- Empire Strikes Back: the most original pick lol. But I have to say the fact that this movie is 40 year old and I would still happily pay to see it in the theatres is a testament in itself. I knew the MAJOR spoiler going in. I'm 17 and chronically online. There is no escaping that. But I still loved this movie from start to finish. The pacing is amazing. Vader is also amazing. I'd be honest, I was disappointed by Vader in A New Hope. But thank goodness my concerns were proven wrong. Loved Lando. And the Imperial March is so good. 9/10
- Revenge of the Sith: might be a little controversial. I just think this Anakin's Fall and Order 66 were wonderfully done. The added context from Clone Wars tv series also helps. And Revenge had some genuine heart which the prequel trilogy really lacked. The plotlines all fall near-perfectly like dominos. And it totally encapsulates what I feel Star Wars is. And General Grievous rules. 8/10
- Rouge One: the first half is uneven. But the final battle sequence is peak Star Wars, literally. And it fixed one my main problems with A New Hope. Haven't checked out the Andor tv show. Plan to catch up with it soon. 7.5/10
- Attack of The Clones: Do I care about the first or the last 30 minutes of this movie?? Hell no. Count Dooku is, to me, disappointing. And the Yoda v Dooku fight had some questionable special effects. But the The Clone Factory in the water planet, the mystery and the stuff with Jango and Boba Fett was great. I loved it. And about the Anakin-Padme romance?? It is cringe and bad to the point that it's funny to me. And I will never forget when Anakin's mom died. I have never laughed so hard in my life before. It was so bad and funny. It is definitely not a good movie but I think I had the most fun watching this. 6.5/10
- The Return of The Jedi: amazing opening sequence and amazing ending. But the 2nd act with the ewoks feels a bit too cartoonish and jarring for me. Literally the only thing that I don't like about return other than the middle feeling like a SLOG to get through. And I watched the prequel trilogy between Empire and Return and it's actually pretty cool how fluidly certain plot points carry over from Revenge to Return. 6.5/10
- A New Hope: Honestly I respect this movie but I don't like it. A New Hope has been copied countless times so some of the iconic moments fell short to what I expected. I know it's a me thing. And the obviously horrible looking digital creatues added later are distracting and kept taking me out of it. As I mentioned earlier, Vader felt disappointing. So did the first lightsaber duel to ever exist. I get it, they hadn't figured that out yet. And, in stark contrast to Empire, A New Hope feels and looks old. Again, I don't want to be disrespectful. It just wasn't for me and it's a subjective ranking. Loved the Double Sunset Scene tho. That scene delivered and the music ate. 6/10
- A Phantom Menace: Loved the Duel of Fates. Darth Maul is amazing. Loved The Pod Race sequence. And, I don't hate Jar Jar but he is suuuper annoying. 4/10
- The Force Awakens: Rehash of A New Hope. Wish we got to see the New Republic before it got obliterated. At least Han's final fate was some-what well executed. I'm glad Han didn't have to suffer through the other two much worse abominations. The ending would've been if it wasn't undermined so heavily by The Last Jedi. 4**/10 because it's at least watchable**
- The Last Jedi: Okay, I could not finish this film. I was about 90 minutes into the movie begging for it to end. So I checked how much movie was left and it turned out to be a whole hour. No thanks, even Death is better than watching the rest of that trash. And Luke drinking from the t*ts of a space Llama?? How did that scene made it into the final cut is beyond me. One good thing, I loved how Mark Hamill was able to get back into character. I was bracing myself for a generic Mark Hamill performance but after seeing the way he talked and moved, he really felt like Luke Skywalker, just older. 1/10 for Mark Hamill
I did not watch Rise of the Skywalker and if it really is worse than The Last Jedi then no thanks I'm good.
Honestly I had a great time watching the OG trilogy and the prequel trilogy. I'm glad I got watch them. This ranking is just about how much I liked the Star Wars movies and is purely a subjective ranking.....except for The Last Jedi. That movie is hot trash. Please be kind.
