Starting freelancing from zero: How do I actually get my first client as a complete beginner?

I am looking to start freelancing, but as a complete beginner to the freelance side of things, the starting line feels a bit overwhelming. I have been learning and practicing my core technical skills, but I have no previous paid freelance experience, no client testimonials, and no real-world business track record yet.

I want to avoid wasting months doing the wrong things, so I’d really appreciate some realistic advice from people who have been in my shoes:

First Portfolio: Without any past clients, what should my portfolio look like? Are personal practice projects enough to prove my skills to someone willing to pay?

First Client Outreach: How do you land client #1 when you have zero reviews? Is cold emailing/messaging people on LinkedIn still effective for complete beginners, or should I start with local outreach/friends and family?

Simple Pitching: What does a non-spammy, direct pitch look like when you don’t have a long track record to flex? How do you convince someone to trust you with their project?

Avoiding Pitfalls: What is the single biggest mistake beginners make when trying to find their first few clients?

If you were starting over today from absolute zero, what exact 2-3 steps would you take in your first month to get momentum?

Thanks in advance for any insights!
