Microscope camera

I have the AmScope SM-3T. I bought a relatively cheap microscope camera and it just doesn’t work with my setup. I’ve went down the rabbit hole and tried a ton of stuff, adapters, lenses, nothing works. I’m sending it back. Can anyone recommend a replacement that they know works for this microscope? I really don’t want to spend the $900+ on the AmScope one. Thoughts? Thx!!

Another microscope question

I bought the camera Alex suggested to go with this microscope. It has to be mounted really high to get anything clear on the monitor. The microscope is zoomed all the way out but I still can’t see the entire movement on the monitor. I can see it with a lot of room to spare looking through the microscope. How can I make it where what you see on the monitor closely matches what I see through the eye piece?

Seiko Turtle project

I’m brand new in this hobby and jumped in the deep end pretty quickly. I bought an old Seiko turtle off of eBay that had water damage. This was too ambitious for a starter project so I circled back around to the ST36 and all of Alex’s videos. I then started back on the Turtle project. I bought a donor movement. Some of the components on the original were to far gone. I finally got the watch clean lubricated and running. Here’s my question. It runs pretty good in the upright position, but amplitude is mid to on the lower end in all positions. This is the 6309 Seiko movement. Do you have any advice on getting the amplitude to increase? ChatGPT says that this movement needs to be at 250 to 280 but I’m not sure if that’s correct honestly. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Advice to beginners from a beginner

I have been at this hobby for four or five months now and enjoy it very much. If you are just getting into it, I’ll give you a little advice on getting started.

1). If you are able to, buy quality tools. In my opinion, the proper tool for the job makes learning easier and everything more enjoyable.

2). There are lots of great online videos. Watch them.

3). Start with an ST36 movement. Take it apart and put it back together until you can do it from memory. Lubricated the last time you assemble it.

4). For me, being able to see what you are doing is critical. After I knew I really enjoyed this hobby, I bought a microscope and it has been the best purchase I’ve made to date.

There are tons of stuff I’m still struggling with. Like sourcing projects to work on. Getting everything cleaned properly. Sourcing parts. Setting hands in casing movements. There’s a lot to learn for sure.

Finding projects

I’m new to the hobby. I have my tools and have serviced the ST36 and can take it apart and put it back together without help now. I purchased a Seiko Turtle that had water damage and have successfully gotten it running again. Not running well, but running. Question… where do you find projects to work on? What do you look for on eBay? Are there alternatives to eBay? I’m not looking for pocket watches. I’m looking for some general guidance on what to buy and what to stay away from. I’d like to try a vintage Hamilton field watch. Is that a good one? Appreciate your advice!

A bit the bullet and bought the AmScope SM-3T with a Barlow lens. I have been trying to set it up properly and I am not sure if the scope is defective or if I’m doing something wrong. It will only get a crisp clear image at the zoom setting of 0.7. It doesn’t matter what height I have the microscope at or if the Barlow lens is on or off. The subject is clear and as soon as you start turning the knob to increase the magnification the image gets blurry. The more you increase the magnification the blurrier it gets. This picture is without the Barlow lens installed. The words on the page are perfectly clear at 0.7 and immediately blurry as you increase magnification. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I know there has been several discussions about microscopes on here but I’d really appreciate some specific thoughts on this. I’m trying to decide whether to buy a digital scope like the tomlov digital microscope or go with the Amscope or one similar through Ali for a quarter of the price. It seems with the optical scope you need to buy additional things like lighting, camera, and lens. What are the pros and cons of each? Which is easier to work with for oiling, inspection, and assembly? I’m sure you can tell I’m pretty new to this so thanks a lot for your thoughts.
