Mike Wheeler and New Masculinities
I love talking about Mike as the heart of the group—the best friend, the good brother, the romantic interest—but I feel his character often goes unnoticed for the incredibly healthy model of masculinity he embodies. In an era that seems defined by extremes, and where many young women swoon over the "men written by women" found in romance novels, it is refreshing to find—in a mainstream series written by men—not only strong female characters but also characters like Mike. He is someone who isn't afraid to be vulnerable, who works on acknowledging his feelings, and who strives to be loyal to those he loves. Within his somewhat complex family, he maintains a great relationship with his mother and sisters; he opens up to his friends about his emotions and supports them in their decisions; and he is creative, intelligent, sweet, kind, funny, brave, selfless, bold, and resilient. Possessing an appeal that defies typical standards, he is the kind of character I wish were more widely appreciated and seen more often in series like this.
