Anyone ever seen amethyst throwing black swarf? Lap is neither new or old, and is a 3000 topper so not any additional diamond added to darken swarf...
Amethyst is a medium to pale colour. Comes from Maraba, Brazil.
Surprised by this colour being produced and so were others I showed it to. Maybe high iron content in the amethyst structure but not a lot of radiation to make it darker purple. Thinking outside the circle here as can find nothing online about it.
Made a big mess to clean up that's for sure.
Going through my rough spinel working out what to cut. The termination of this one doesn't look like your average spinel. I have no reason to doubt the supplier as they are excellent. It's not magnetic. No other tests performed yet. From Mozambique and it's very blue in colour. Any and all ideas welcome.
I've been searching for a while for some synthetic sapphire to cut Arya Akhavan's "Leaf in the wind" faceting diagram and was after an Autumn (or Fall for anyone from the USA etc) coloured rough so it would look like a falling Autumn leaf and I happened to find this bi coloured half boule and it's perfect. It has some fractures which I can work around but if I stuff up the main section that I want to use as I want to cut it as big as possible, I have no backup as this is all I've found. As a bonus it appears to have a colour shift under incandescent. Does anyone know if this is just a stuff up from some lab, old stock or is actually something being currently produced so I can access some backup rough?
