Business/PE travel in software/SaaS firms

My last company had a strict policy of economy only for company events (e.g. Sales Kickoff, Customer conferences). One of my colleagues who's very tall, was able to get business class in his contract. I'm curious:

  • How many companies expect you to fly economy?
  • How likely is it to be able to negotiate this in contracts?

I was able to fly PE in my last job over 7 hours as I have back problems and my physio gave me a letter stating I couldn't travel long distances in economy, but would rather have it in contract. I just don't know how common this is as a request and if it's easy for them to accommodate or not.

Thanks.

Word doc cleaning

I have been trying to parse word docs for use with llama3.1:8b in Ollama. I only need the text - Even if I cut and past into a text editor weird characters seem to stick around which break llama/Ollama. If I use regular expressions to remove every non-asci character it works, but that's not practical.

I tried setting up open WebUI and setting apache tika to process the docs, but it's not working. What would you recommend? I'm open to changing tools .

Basically if any of these characters are still in the file, I get gibberish output. Any suggestions appreciated!

Touring routes in Australia with good accommodation options and quiet roads or trails

I've just returned from the UK where I rode the Trans Pennine trail. 60-70km per day, staying in cheap hotels each night. Was very easy to plan with lots of options.

I have done some multi-day rides here in Australia (I live in Sydney), but in looking at a lot of the routes like the Orange Villages trail or the Central West Cycle Trail, there are very limited accommodation options if you don't like camping and the options there are tend to quite expensive.

Sticking to the coast gives a lot more accommodation options, but often means riding on busy, sometimes dangerous roads.

What routes 4+ days would you recommend that provide the best mix of good accommodation options and relatively safe/quiet roads or trails? I'm in NSW, but am open to anything on the East coast.

Thanks.

Klickfix to Brompton style carrier block adaptor

Before I make my own, does anyone know if you can buy something that converts from klickfix to either a Brompton style carrier block, or the metal frame that often connects to those blocks that many bags use?

I have a bag that is designed to use one of those frames and it doesn't fit on my Vario rack.

Thanks.

Ergo bars for Dahon bikes

Looking at getting a dahon bike and noticed the bars go inside the frame when folded.

I have ergonomic swept back bars on my other bikes and want to know if there are any that won't impact the fold. Do they use standard bars, or are they dahon specific?

Thanks.

How do you know when your folding bike has reached it's end of life?

I've read several times that aluminium bikes have a finite lifespan. With the fold being a place where failure could be life threatening, how do I know when I need to retire my bike (or at least the frame)?

I have a Tern Verge I love, but I have had it for 3 years and it was second hand when I got it so my guess is it's anywhere from 8-15 years old (based on the model age). There is no rust, but I don't know how I can tell when it's at risk of failing. Is this something a bike shop can check at all?

Thanks.

Best bags/Panniers for folders in the wet

I've just completed a 6 day trip across the Trans Pennine Trail in the UK. While most things went well, I'm not used to riding in wet conditions so much - it raised a bit every day so there were lots of puddles, mud, etc leading to a very dirty bike and bags most days. Having 20" wheels means your bags are never too far off the ground.

It's making me consider different (smaller) rear panniers or a racktop bag (either the Ortlieb rackpack 24l or a similar aliexpress clone). What do you use is wet conditions?

Thanks.

Usage monitoring

I have a mesh network with a mix of XE75 Pro and XE75 regular units.

We recently moved to 5G internet due to problems with our fixed line. We've always had unlimited but now we have a 1TB limit (and it's not possible to get more), after which it's slowed to 25mb.

We are hitting the limit most months and I'd like to track down what each device is using. I've seen comments about it being available either in the Deco app, or via the web UI. I can't find it in either. I've seen mention of this being available IF I sign up for extra services, but i'm not clear if it will provide what I want.

#1 - is their a way to ssh to the main unit and extract logs I can use to calculate this?

#2 - is it available from the app either free or via paid services?

#3 - assuming no to both above, is there any way I can do this with 3rd party utilities?

Thanks.
