Restoring a Tempest Blue Brompton back to life

A few months ago I picked up a blue Brompton as a new restoration project and a way to learn something different. I specifically wanted a Brompton because the whole folding system makes it completely unlike working on a regular bike — more complicated in some ways, but also way more interesting. I figured it would force me to learn new things, and it definitely did.

At first glance the bike actually looked pretty decent, but after a quick wash I decided to completely strip it down anyway so I could inspect every single component properly and restore anything that needed attention.

In the end I replaced the tires, cables, saddle, grips, mudguards, and one of the shifters that was completely trashed. I also polished the entire frame to bring the paint back to life. The transformation was honestly bigger than I expected — the bike barely shows its age now, and the blue really shines again.

What I enjoyed most about this project was discovering how cleverly engineered these bikes are once you fully take them apart. Every little mechanism feels intentional, and restoring one gave me a whole new appreciation for why people love Bromptons so much.

I documented the whole process along the way, from the first cleaning to the final rebuild, and I thought some of you might enjoy seeing it.

For those of you who’ve worked on Bromptons before: what part surprised you the most when you first tore one down? And for the longtime owners — what’s the one upgrade or detail you think makes the biggest difference on these bikes? 🚲✨

It's fun to choose and install.

The integrated carbon sitpost (227g), 2-volt carbon sitpost (295g), 2-volt titanium sitpos (340g), and clip-type titanium sitpost (titanium: 288g, clip: 104g) all have different vibes, so it's fun.

Suggerimenti?

Any budget tire recommendations 1.75" width or lower?

Currently looking at the kenda kwest or panaracer hp406 but looking for more options. Not sure how hard these temp Walmart knobbys are making it harder but I'm getting old, might switch out rear cog.

My Urtopia Fold 1 at golden hour, Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Behold the regal Fold 1, here now at Dead Horse Ranch State Park. Love my Urtopia Fold

Not a paid poster, I appreciate the quality of the construction and components, the weight and compact bundle that I can lift in and out of my suv, setup in seconds, and ride trails on my trips. The tires aren't wide or snobby enough for fine sand, but I have taken Urp (my nickname for the nike) to forests, crossed creeks, deserts and rocky trails with remarkable success.

Folding e-bike for senior with walking difficulties?

What is the best folding e-bike 20” for stability that still pedals nicely. I’m looking for my first e-bike. I want to maintain my mobility and move easily throughout my community. Need some cargo space as well. What are the best models? Thinking around $1200

Camping World 24" 12-speed Stowaway folding Bike

I have a stowaway 24" 12-speed folding bike from Camping World. I love the size and the color, but it is exptremely heavy and hard to fold and unfold because of its weight. I am wondering if someone who has this particular bike (blue) if they are having the same struggle and what have you done to make it a fun ride because I am not enjoying it the way that I was hoping I would. Was thinking about modifying it with an allloy seat post, different style handlebars (if possible), and lighter weight tires. Thanks to anyone who can help me out! 🙂

Made my own bag, kinda

I bought a bag adapter and modified an old pannier so I can take the money I saved and spend it on upgrades. Yay.

Is this a good deal?

I gave my folding bike away to a friend like a dummy and now I want one again. Any thoughts on this one from FB Marketplace?

Rockbros gravis

Couldn’t find any reviews anywhere on this bike so I took a huge risk and bought it. Love the lugs on the frame and the cnc’d brakes. Shipping took over a month expedited and the box was fucked but the bike was mostly okay. My first folding bike so figuring it out without directions was fun. Put a brooks saddle from the parts bin on to add a little more class. Ride to work today was awesome. Can’t wait to fly to big city with it. Let me know if anyone has recommendations for bike bags.

Market for Used Folding Bikes?

Hello All,

Is there a market for used folding bicycles? I have a 6 month old Zizzo Forte that I bought as a travel bike, but found I like my mini-velo better.

Any advice on selling the Zizzo to someone who will use it?

FB Marketplace Purchase Advice

Hi all,

looking to purchase a cheap as foldable bike for a pretty short 4.5km daily commute. For $80AUD ($55US), how bad can it be?

Really though, that’s my question - how bad can it be?
- is it likely that I’ll end up spending a lot more on replacing faulty parts?
- what should I be looking at to check before buying?

Budget friendly and reliable

Hello!

I used to have a bike cruiser and own a Hyundai Kona. I’ve been wanting to get a bike to ride along the beaches (near LA) so i don’t need anything crazy. But i don’t want to get a bike rack and have been looking at folding bikes. Was looking at definitely getting 20” wheels but don’t know much about the brands i’ve been seeing and would love to know people’s recommendations.

I also have a friend who is training for a mini triathlon. We plan on taking bikes along a river bike path for 6~15 mile rides eventually. So want to ensure I get a reliable folding bike that can fit in my car and won’t hurt my wallet.

Thank you for all recs!!
