So when your hands delicately brushed the strands of my wet hair
as the stars outside shone and the ones in my belly twinkled
What did that mean?

When, though a trickle of tears, you told me you wanted love and connection
when I shared my dream for safety and depth with you
And you looked me in the eyes
and firmly told me to go after what I want
I did

The whirling so loud that I simply had to release this truth
Met with the ticking of the clock
A stillness that made me question the construct of time
A detached gaze away from the supernova to your right
Up at the sky, towards the darkness
And a sprinkle of words that disintegrated as soon as they had been spoken
What was that?

When you held my hand, lay by my side, swooped me up from the ground
and stopped space and time so we could connect
I thought you were my binary star
The woman I was meant to orbit
Why didn’t you tell me you were actually a black hole?

When you said you’ve been thinking of me
the conversations we shared, the piano song I loved
the inner workings of my mind
But you can’t even tell me what you feel
Unable to be a friend let alone anything deeper
What is your goal?

Your feelings conveniently inaccessible
hiding behind tightly packed layers of barricades
just transparent enough to see through but more impenetrable than a diamond
Occasionally leaking out though a trap door only to be discovered and secured once more

After basking in the light of my honesty, my confession
my patience, and my openness
What did you mean by that?

I offered myself with arms outstretched, palms up
And you looked into my soul and closed your eyes
Crossed your arms

I reached for you again and again
You turned away
Only coming back right when I had started by own departure
Pulling me back into your orbit
Pulling me back into a galaxy I had never before been
But so similar to the ones I’ve known
A planet so beautiful
But uninhabitable
