Hardware issue disclosure

Hardware issue disclosure

What happened?

Thanks to the recent post, I've discovered a hardware issue with the USB connection.

The issue is present in all rev8 and rev9 boards, including, unfortunately, a large recent batch that is currently finishing production in China.

What is the issue?

USB power works fine, but USB data doesn't go through at first, requiring you to restart the device 3–5 times. As the issue is in the hardware, it affects both DFU mode and the regular firmware.

What to do?

If you are planning to use the device wired, you will have to restart it several times before use by clicking the "reset" button, waiting at least 1 second between clicks, until it is detected by your OS.

If "double-click reset to enter DFU" doesn't work for you even after that, hold the top-top-left button ("Enter" in the default keymap) and single-click the "reset" button. You may need to do this several times as well, until it shows up as a storage device.

Can it be repaired?

Yes, a bodge wire repair is possible, but it's a tough job.

Here's the wire you'd need to run: https://postimg.cc/5HJWXWmB

My policy

Unfortunately, I will not be able to replace boards affected by this issue. It is an annoyance and a point of frustration, but it's not something critical that prevents the device from working. I ask for your understanding in this matter — more than a hundred affected boards have already been shipped, and more than two hundred will depart from China in a few days. I simply don't have the resources to run a recall campaign.

I will, however, attempt to repair the boards that have not been shipped yet. To be honest, I'm not too confident it's within my skills. Repairing one or two is certainly doable, but repairing hundreds might result in a huge percentage of permanently destroyed boards. I will post an update on the matter once I have the necessary tools, which I have already ordered.

Technical details

The rev7 hardware had a different charging IC — the AXP2585 — with a power path output, labeled as the "VBUS" net. The IC was discontinued, and in rev8 I replaced it with a different chip that does not have an integrated power path. The "VBUS" net was used in a single place — to power the USB multiplexer, which exists solely for the purpose of fast charging. Unfortunately, I managed to make the silliest possible mistake: I missed this connection and left the "VBUS" net where the power should go, effectively leaving the power input of the multiplexer floating. I truly have no idea why it starts working after several reboots. The floating capacitor must somehow charge from the electric fields created by the various processes that happen on boot. The multiplexer obviously uses MOSFETs internally, so once there's enough voltage on the capacitor, it keeps working and doesn't misbehave anymore, until the capacitor is somehow discharged again.

The fact that it works after several restarts made me believe it was either some kind of production issue or a software issue. I had to perform the restarting routine when flashing the boards, but they behaved fine after that, which also made me believe it would not affect customers. I didn't find the root cause earlier because, typically, by the time I receive a batch of boards, there are already a dozen emails asking when an order will ship. In any case, this was stupid of me, and I should've debugged it properly.

I'm really sorry for the experience, and I hope it won't cause major frustration with the device.

Reminder: in one day, new orders for kits will be paused for 3 months

In the meantime, I'm actively working on fulfilling and shipping existing orders. Unfortunately, as always, there are difficulties, logistical and operational. 20% of PCBs from the latest batch ended up defective, and it means delays for orders made in June and July. I've also unexpectedly ran out of the upgraded sensors — another batch is currently in transit, so if you don't have your tracking number yet, and your order contains upgraded sensors, please expect shipping at least in ~10 days.

As always, I really appreciate your patience and understanding. I can only imagine how frustrating my delays are for you — I was hoping to be able to catch up with the supply, but it clearly didn't work out. This should change with the pause.

[Review request] nRF54LM20B + PAW3950 (USB High Speed + 16 MHz SPI)

Hi folks. Just finished an initial board design, would love some sanity check from the community.

The board has 2 power inputs: USB and external battery input (up to 5.5V), which are then OR'ed and bucked into ~1.9V.

Stackup is SIG/GND+PWR/SIG/SIG/GND/SIG. USB HS on the bottom layer, ~280 mm, matched to 90 Ohm differential impedance, with a solid uninterrupted ground above.

I need PAW3950 to work at the maximum possible 16 MHz, MISO/MOSI/CLK are lenght matched as well, just in case.

Non-coplanar 50 Ohm feedline for the antenna, because there isn't much sense to introduce a coplanar waveguide this short (I believe). Technically the via fence makes it a CPW anyways, but it's far from the trace.

The antenna itself is from Infineon reference guide: infineon.com/assets/row/public/documents/cross-divisions/42/infineon-an91445-antenna-design-and-rf-layout-guidelines-applicationnotes-en.pdf

nRF54LM20B doesn't have a reference design for the QFN52 yet, so hopefully their other one works here too.

My primary concerns are:

  1. The board will be 0.8 mm in thickness for the wiggly parts to be bendable. Should I worry about the antenna ground plane vias acting as mouse bites?
  2. Should I perhaps try to fit the buck converter closer to the power consumers? I have a 47 uF bulk cap there, but I'm still worrying about that large inductive power trace.
  3. I used 4x49.9 Ohm resistors for the USB impedance matching, just for BOM optimization reasons. The MCU technically expects 200 Ohm, I don't think it would be an issue though?
  4. The nRFs aren't available for assembly in my fab yet; I indent to get the boards assembled without these, and then solder them down manually with a tiny hot table of mine. Any nuances I'm missing here?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Please don't mind ugly squiggly lines, I will fix them lol.

Starting from August 1st, orders for kits will be paused for 3 months

Hello community!

First of all, a note for the Endgame owners: I would recommend updating to a newly released v1.3.0 — especially if you are a MacOS user, as it allows to scale drag- and twist-scroll in runtime, with different coefficients for Windows/Linux and MacOS. Can be found in raw settings, under "bst" section. s0 is Win/Lin, s1 is MacOS.

Now, the pause. Starting from August 1st I will take a 3 months pause for kits. I will use this time to ensure decent stock, quality of assembly and packaging, and quality of the assembly guide and the (yet unreleased) knowledge base.

Any accessories, including trackballs, BTUs, sensor upgrades, will not be affected by the pause. However, there will be no option to purchase a motherboard.

After the pause, I intend to ship kits with 3-5 days lead time instead of 6 weeks.

If you were to make a purchase, you may want to decide whether to make it now, or after the pause.

Following the flashmob, I'm happy to present EFOGTECH© Ball Transfer Unit

https://preview.redd.it/89pz86v1s66h1.png?width=1663&format=png&auto=webp&s=1272c31684be12e7298431d92fed36021c928e82

The idea has been floating in my head for quite some time — but it actually were u/scatterthought's semi-static bearings that finally made me actually do something.

Why? This one is simple. Rexroth BTUs, even though amazingly smooth, are really expensive and are not silent. Which is understandable — they were never intended for the trackball use.

For whom? Primarily, these are of course focused on the Endgame Trackball owners, but there are many Ploopy mods designed for the BOSCH BTUs — notably mods of the Adept and Classic trackballs.

A few members of the Discord community have already had a chance to test these, and here is what they think: https://postimg.cc/gallery/07w5nPz

The full description is available on the website — and you can buy these already! However, for now, there is no stainless version, which is planned. If you need the stainless ones, you can click "notify" to get an email when they get released.

As a side note, I'm taking the opportunity to remind you that my website is still the only place in the universe to purchase green and purple 55 mm balls :)

Looking forward for the feedback!
