Passed for a promotion for the second time.

I recently learned that I have been passed over for a promotion. They are handing it out to a woman who is consistently offline/ missing for hours at end/ takes a lot of leave with little to notice(my manager has been visibly annoyed by this multiple times).

Meanwhile I am always available, do my tasks diligently and have had good ratings. She is also less experienced than me. I am mentally checked out of my job and have had panic attacks due to the toxicity in general. I am on leave but a coworker who is a friend mentioned that she saw the promo doc for the lady getting promoted on my manager’s screen. To add insult to injury my skip level manager recently reprimanded the lady getting promoted about the number of leaves she takes.

I don’t know why I feel a lot of sadness in spite of hating my job. I’m tired of this company and team. Has anyone else been in a situation like this where they were passed up for a promo they were more deserving of?

Best resources for ETL based interview.

I have a data engineering hiring manager 45 min long round with Apple. I was hired as an SDE in my current role but ended up with data engineering work so I have never really given a data engineering interview.

I have been told I will be asked questions on Java, ETL pipelines, SQL and scalability. The range is so wide that I do not know what to focus on and possibly need some help narrowing down on areas I could focus on for the next 3 days.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions they would be appreciated!

Apple tech screen : ETL based role

I have a tech screen scheduled for the upcoming week and the recruiter mentioned the contents of the interview being Java /SQL questions, scalability and ETL pipeline related questions.

It’s a 45 min round and I’m unsure of how I can possibly prepare. They have sent coderpad link. What would be some focus areas? Anyone who has given one of these- is leetcode for java and sql good enough? Please help.

How to inform manager about FMLA for mental health?

I have severe anxiety and I’m now anxious about informing my manager about my FMLA for mental health.
There are no clear steps on how to go about the process. My job has pushed me over the edge and I cannot deal with it any more.
There is conflicting info everywhere. Some places ask to submit the claim with the 3rd party vendor and then inform my workplace. Some say filing the claim itself informs the workplace. I’m so confused and I’m struggling with all of the information.

I’m worried about telling my workplace. They will not consider mental health seriously. Please help with the steps.

I do have a psychiatrist whom I have been seeing for the last three months and I am on medication management. My PCP and therapist are also on board with this. My psychiatrist has deemed it necessary to go on leave.

I’m in California, have worked for the company for 3+ years and am eligible for fmla.

Edit: Thank you to everyone who commented, reassured me about my decision and helped me frame a response. I appreciate you all!

How to prepare for Amplitude tech screen?

I have an upcoming amplitude interview in the 3rd week of June and wanted to see how I can prepare and what was asked for people who have already gone through the rounds for this company.

Been told that I will have to set up and pick my own IDE there won’t be a standardized coding platform for this role. Confused about what that means.

Internal Switch

Just a quick question regarding internally mobility. What is the chance of getting an interview if I apply internally? I have previously applied and moved on to another team in the past but I feel like I’m only getting rejected from internal roles these days. Is there a freeze or is it me?

Weird on-call expectations

Hi folks want to know if this is the situation in other teams as well.
Full breakdown of my situation:
We have a primary and secondary engineer on-call each rotation besides a DevOps team that is the first line of defense.

There are a bunch of sub teams under the same team.
Let’s say I am on team 1 and the issue is from team 2 or 3, I redirect the issue to them and vice versa.

At any given time, if the issue is from one of the other teams during working hours I usually get a response from one of those two teams. After-hours it is a hit or miss.

For my specific team that is under an M4, we have a separate on call rotation schedule to support the folks who are on team 2 and team 3 that go on-call. This involved being perpetually available during the 12 hour shift or else we get verbally abused. The same is not observed with team 2 and team 3. They do not have a separate on-call rotation besides the primary/secondary rotation. I have also noticed instances where they have missed pings directed to them and not been yelled at.

This has now become out of hand where we are perpetually on-call one day of every week when the members from team 2 and team 3 are on primary-secondary support. Besides our regular primary secondary shift.

To top it all. We have two daily updates call one for the manager and one for our skip manager to read out our updates from a wiki we populate. In this wiki, if you mention the support you provided you are very likely to get yelled at by the skip manager saying that we are a not a devops team but a development team.

In addition to all this, just acknowledging on slack that we are looking into the issue does not suffice. We are supposed to constantly update devops saying we are checking every 15 min(disruptive to the debugging process) or else we risk getting yelled at.

We are also expected to be butlers to the skip and be available for his calls at odd hours. They will just ask to join their zoom and we have to within five minutes.
Is this normal across Oracle? I’m unsure of the expectations at this point.

How to cope with performance evaluation season?

Morale has been low. I’m also dealing with depression and haven’t been able to take on new tasks. I do complete whatever is required. My team laid off folks who worked round the clock so my motivation to work has been even worse post the layoffs. I do the bare minimum but I now find myself stressing as the evals are around. How is everyone coping with this? How can I treat my job like noise? Prior to this my rating was good and there was still no raise. I have been at the same designation for over 5 years, my self esteem has reached rock bottom as a result of this. I’m trying to look for opportunities externally but no luck so far. I just want inputs on how everyone is doing and what I can do to best support myself through this?
