FFDP Lyrics

I get why people make fun of FFDP’s lyrics but I think people mistake their unsubtle aesthetic for having no subtext. A lot of their songs have more going on.

Like I saw people mock Shelter for lines like “if it all burns down… we can remake it in Hollywood” and “we can rebuild it in Disney World,” but I actually think that’s a bit clever. Hollywood remakes, and Disney rebuilds, all sorts of catastrophes into sanitized, commercialized and artificial versions

Same with “all I see are robots, goblins and creeps”. I read robots as things like AI, goblins as greed and people hoarding wealth and power, and creeps as predatory people. Like “creeps” doesn't literally mean Epstein but those are the kinds of associations I make that are very poignant and with the time.

Like the lyrics are melodramatic, blunt and often corny, and that’s part of what I like about them. I just think there’s a difference between corny and stupid. Like some things are actually clever.

Sometimes they are just stupid though.

Rant about AP

I recently came back to League after a hiatus, and Volibear used to be my favorite champion. Back when I quit, AP builds existed but were mostly an alternative to the classic tank/bruiser style. Now it feels like every recommended build is centered around AP and attack speed. Is anyone else tired of AP being the default?

I want to build him around durability and force. That’s why I love his W. Using Grasp, healing and mauling someone repeatedly while refusing to die feels coherent with his design. To me, the fun came from his W and R. Landing a good E for the damage and shield is satisfying but what I loved most was running Grasp and mauling people with empowered Ws.

His kit isn't the problem. I think the issue is the power balance. His AD scalings are low and his base AD is awful so bruiser items don’t feel good. Instead a lot of power is tied to his passive and AP ratios. The current balance pushes him more toward something an AP auto-attacker using Nashor’s and Navori. It makes sense that the lightning and thunder parts are tied to AP, but he feels more like an AP skirmisher than a juggernaut.

Volibear is huge, brutal, heavy, and unstoppable and his theme, animations, voice, and design is badass. I wish he felt more like that in game. Ornn uses magic, but his fantasy still revolves around being a powerful tank. Anivia on the other hand is designed as a fragile mage. When you see her, you understand that she dies if you reach her. Her gameplay and visual identity match perfectly. I wish Volibear was more similar to Ornn than Anivia.

Seeing Lethal Tempo as his most common rune is so odd. I want Volibear to feel somewhere between Ornn and Sett, not AP Diana without mobility.

I want tank/bruiser Volibear back as an alternative. Obviously AP shouldn’t be removed as a lot of players enjoy it and build diversity is good, but I wish HP/AD was more rewarding and attractive as an alternative.

For example:

  • Improve his base AD growth so bruiser items feel better
  • Give his E slow or size an HP scaling
  • Make his R health increase a percentage of bonus HP instead of a flat amount

I wish you got more for building tankier. His R feels like the perfect place to reinforce this. Imagine if the bonus size and survivability scaled with bonus health. If you commit to a tank/bruiser build, Volibear should become a raid boss and not a nuke. That would reinforce the fantasy so AP means storm magic and lightning damage and HP/AD means unstoppable bear. Both could exist but now it feels like the balance favors one fantasy over the other, even though the character design supports both

I mainly played him top, by the way.
