Online Tutoring as a fulltime job

For tutors that do Preply and othe online platforms as a fulltime job, how do you cover all expenseses? Particularly if you live in a "high cost" country like the US, Canada, UK, Germany, etc.

Locked out of account

I changed my phone number on my Gmail account, the number was accepted and was confirmed through text message. However, now when I try to log into my account, I am asked for a recovery email. After entering the recovery email I recieve a code. I entered that code, and then they send ANOTHER code to my phone number. The problem is that the last code is being sent to my OLD number which I don't have anymore.

Now I can't access my account.

Any advice or reccomendation on what to do about tgis would be great. Thanks

Last minute cancellation

I have a new student that sent me a message asking if we could reschedule 1 hour before the lesson time. This particular lesson took a decent amount of preparation time.

I'm wondering what other tutors would do in this situation? I don't mind rescheduling, for example through my own calender, however, I don't really like the idea of losing the lesson cost since it did take preparation time and it is past the italki 24 policy for cancelling the lesson.

Student management programs

Recommendations on the best apps for catalouging, organizing students and lesson plans and materials.

Currently I have been using a seperate file for each student with notes, Google Docs and Excel.

I primarily teach Business, Medical, Intermediate to Advanced English and Fluency Training, and in most cases the classes are adjusted to the individual student's industry, specialty and goals. So, in general I'm not really able to use the same lessons with every student.

I also create a lot of my own learning materials. Some general, some specialized topics.

Most of my Intermediate level General English students I use textbooks with, so this is much simpler than the specialized classes.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

How annoying is that?

The week before July 1st I had 2 trial lessons. 1 lesson on June 29th. I lost my Super Tutor badge on July 1st because my conversion rate dropped to 59.4% (under the 60% baseline).

Today both students subscribed and now I'm above the 60% again but no Super Tutor😆

But, really? How irritating would that be for other tutors?

English Tutors charging $25 and up

For tutors that charge in the price range of 25 to 50 an hour, how often do you recieve trial requests or gain new students? Do you generally attract a specific type of student? As in Test Prep, Corporate, or others?

Also, how does your average profile position look compared to when you may have charged less?

Profile Position

My question is about the Average Profile Position ranking on my profile. I just recently started back on Preply and made my profile visible again. I am also listed as a Super Tutor. After about a week from republishing, my profile position was between generally between 100 and 30. I have also been recieving a good amount of trial requests, and my conversion rate is 70% as of now.

However, two days ago my profile position dropped to 200 and today it is at 480.

Can anyone share any feedback regarding the profile position system itself. How does it work and what could be the reason for the sudden drop?

Scam?

Recently recieved a message from a student that told me that they want to work on their application for a fellowship program but needs my email to send me the document before booking a trial lesson.

I told them I am sure I can help them with this because I have relevant experience but they need to communicate through Preply.

Is this a known scam?

First negative review but student seemed happy

I had my first negative review recently, but what confused me a little is that they seemed very happy at the end of the first lesson.

Said things like "this is exactly what I was looking for", there didn't seem to be any issue, no complaints, and so on.

But then left a review saying that I corrected them to much, I didn't compliment them enough on what they were good at, and my sound was bad and they couldn't hear me well because of background noise?

Most of my students before this have told me and left reviews saying how I correct them very respectfully, fix their mistakes without making them feel uncomfortable, etc.

I always explain to any new students about corrections and ask them if they are okay with being corrected during the lesson or after we are done talking. This student asked me to correct them during.

Also didn't say anything about the sound or background noise when I asked about the sound being clear.

(Also, I sit in a room by myself for lessons, so I'm not sure what the background noise was?)

The first lesson I usually just try to get to know the student and what the best learning method is for them, what their goals are, so I ask questions about what they are comfortable with and give a short demo adjusted to those goals.

Has anyone else dealt with this kind of student before? And what is your take?

Best learning app

Which language learning app is more popular with students? Preply or Italki and why?

I am a tutor on both latforms and personally prefer Italki as a teacher, but I'm curious about the students viewpoint.
