I had a direct flight with WestJet from Winnipeg to Cancún for December but it’s been changed to a 50 minute stopover in Toronto.

Wondering if anyone could speak to whether this is doable. They put us on the first flight to Toronto from Winnipeg and the last flight to Cancún from Toronto for the day. Will I have to collect my baggage? Is it in the same terminal? Customs?

Me nor my travel agent has been able to get a hold of WestJet at all. I think 12h of being on hold between me and them.

Title. Am I obligated to take an earlier flight or could I accept the huge delay to get the compensation money from the airline (in this case $1,000 for >9 hours per Air Canada policy)?

Any info on this would be appreciated.

Additional context:

They auto re-booked me for a flight with a 12 hour layover instead of a 1 hour layover. This would result in a $1,000 payout under normal circumstances.

I am travelling with a co-worker. There is one seat available on the only alternative flight with an equivalent layover. I am wondering if I opt to be the one that is left in the dust if I get the $1,000 from Air Canada.

The majority of the delay occurs on personal time, not work hours.

Looking for resort recommendations in Mexico. We have previously stayed at Riu and Bahia Luxury resorts and had a good time but are looking for other options.

We are looking for 2 weeks in December 2026 (get home before Christmas) for 2 adults (a couple). Our budget is ~3-3.5k CAD per person which is what we typically pay for 2 weeks.

Ocean view room is preferred unless there is a unique perk (eg Bahia Sian Kaan was in the jungle which was cool).

We value quietness, allergy friendly food options and liquor options that aren’t fire water.
