Help! Moving to Maastricht: how do I get a BSN if I need housing first?
Hi everyone!
I'm planning to move to the Netherlands at the end of this year. I'm from Italy, and if everything goes according to plan, I'll be starting a university course in Maastricht next year.
My goal is to move before the end of this year, so I can settle in, find a job, learn Dutch, and integrate into the local community before my studies begin.
The issue I'm running into is the registration process. As far as I understand, I need a BSN to start working, and I can only get a BSN after registering in the BRP. However, to register in the BRP, I need a long-term rental contract, and the registration has to be done within five days of arriving in the Netherlands.
Since I know the housing market in Maastricht is extremely competitive, I'm wondering how people usually manage this. Finding a long-term place to live within just a few days seems almost impossible.
Am I misunderstanding how the process works? Is there another way to get a BSN or start working while I'm still looking for permanent accommodation?
I've lived in a few non-EU countries before, and surprisingly the immigration process there felt more straightforward than this. It just seems a bit strange that, as an EU citizen with the right to live and work in the Netherlands, getting started can be so complicated.
Please, let me know what I'm missing or if you have any advice🙏🏻
