"Bhubaneswar is great, but it lacks soul". Why?

I have often come across people praising Bhubaneswar for its infrastructure, cleanliness, food, people, peace, etc., especially people who have moved here from outside Odisha.

But then there are also people who say, "Bhubaneswar is a nice city, but it doesn't have a soul."

I won't lie, I have felt the same at times.

I've thought about it quite a bit, and I think I may have finally figured out what creates that feeling.

Take Katak, for example. A large part of the population has roots in the city going back generations. People have grown up there, their parents grew up there, their grandparents probably did too. There is a certain shared way of living, shared memories, shared places, shared culture and a sense of belonging that develops over decades.

Bhubaneswar is different.

A significant part of its population has moved here from different parts of Odisha, while many others have come from outside Odisha altogether. Everyone brings their own culture, habits, food, language and way of living.

And perhaps that's why there isn't one common identity that binds everyone together.

Everyone has their own little Bhubaneswar.

Maybe that's what people mean when they say the city lacks "soul".

Or maybe I'm completely wrong.

What do you think?
