I am about to be going on a backpacking trip with my family in Tahoe national forest, near a bunch of lakes with rocky terrain.

I just got into an argument with my grandfather and would like other peoples opinions.

For context, I have extremely wide feet. My daily shoes are crocs, most of my hiking is done in crocs or cheap Walmart sneakers. My mother bought me hiking boots off amazon, the tags have long since been ripped off, and I’m not quite sure the brand.

Over the course of two years I’ve tried to wear them, and two other pairs. Every time my pink and big toe get crazy blisters, my ankles get blisters, and the top of my feet even got blisters. I hoped I could break them in, but after multiple hikes, and one very very unfortunate backpacking trip they never got any better.

Now back to the present. I’m ordering myself some trail running shoes for my trip instead. My grandfather used ChatGPT to ask what shoes to wear, he kept showing me that chat gpt said to wear hiking boots for the trip. He says that flexible soles are bad for backpacking on rocky terrain.

What are your thoughts?

Flexible running soles, or hard hiking boots?
