How do I stop getting stomped?

I recently started playing this game for the first time because I liked the visuals and body horror, even though I'm not that into turn based RPGs; the only one I played the last few years is a tactical RPG.

I'm not really stuck but I'm just progressing slowly and have trouble avoiding fights and losing. I'm like 3 days in to the game and need some advice on how to get better at... just not dying, even if it means keeping combat to a minimum.

Thoughts on my house?

My friend told me it stinks but I just think he doesn't have the same level of creative vision that I do.
