Couple of noob questions...
So I have something like 300 hours in this game and still have some noob questions, lol. I tend to run back and forth up and down the noob river until I get at least steel tools/weapons but then tend to kind of flail as I'm unsure what to do at that point (I don't do all that well with games that do not direct the PC truth be told). I'm curious what people's opinions are on a few things:
1.) Where do you go after leaving Noob River? I generally get to steel, take on the Dregs (I had two greater hyenas which made it pretty trivial honestly, but I have a question about that as well), and then do the "Opherian" loop around the city to pick up heavy hide and try to find a baby rhino (I *swear* I've seen one once in the exiled lands). At that point I have difficulty as it's not as clear what to do. The obvious next step is to go to the Tower of Bats and bring the staff to life, but that's a pretty short quest. Do you go east to the jungle and smack down on pirates? Go northeast? Get yourself eviscerated by skeletons in the city?
2.) Do people use horses? I generally don't bother with them as I don't care about speed and horses are a bit awkward around the rivers (plus I usually play an agility fighter and there are *no* agility weapons that can be used on horseback besides the bow). I like grabbing a camel for the huge inventory but I could take or leave horses.
3.) I am not familiar with strength weapons as this is literally the first character I've played for any significant time that is strength based. I've been cycling in between maces and axes but I'm unsure which may be better. Axes seem better for unarmored opponents and maces seem to have better armor penetration, right? I ended up picking up a legendary mace in the Dregs so that's my primary for probably the distant future, but I'm still curious. I'm a pretty dedicated X and board fighter. Two-handed weapons are unstoppable when they get rolling but they don't seem to start rolling very quickly.
4.) Low stakes question: where do you like to set up a permanent base? Once quite a while back I stuck with a character long enough to wander into the northern tundra lands and established a base at the base of the dam. I tend to play a bit of a nomadic character (which works decently well when I steal enough tents from the pirates) but eventually I do like setting up a more permanent base.
5.) Forgot to ask: what on earth kind of damage works well against skeletons? The Dregs is a PITA solely because of the skeletons. Even the giant spider and the end boss were easier than the skeleton masses.
EDIT: I've discovered the joy of being a beastmaster. So far the cannibals are all getting ripped to absolute shreds by my flotilla of crocodiles. I have no idea why I never thought of playing a beastmaster; It's absolutely my favorite class to play if given a chance. I'm experimenting with all the distance/attack sliders to see if I can make my crocodiles attack at a bit of a distance and my shellbacks hang back as bodyguards.
EDIT 2: I worked my tail off to get myself a greater shellback but I may leave him for guard duty. He is absolutely massive.
