Title: Bass Shadow c. 2010 PTP
Let's just say that the building rehab scene here does include the door--but contrasts it with another happening that takes advantage of the space and gives it a new purpose--however transient.
This image was captured in 2010 at the future location of Tommy Trent's Sports Saloon at the top of Market Square in Knoxville, TN. The entire building had been empty for several years, and the artistic souls from the University of Tennessee and the community added this contextual fabric. Along the side remain the staples which posted many cultural events over those years. All are long gone.

When Pipe Smoking was King
Once upon a time in the late 50s, and through the 70s--pipe displays such as for Dr. Grabow, Kaywoodie, Medico, Yello-Bole, and the venerable Missouri Meerschaum corn cob were to be found in virtually every drug store, grocery, or Woolworths. Along with them were the tobaccos--Half and Half, Prince Albert, Carter Hall, and Middletons Cherry.
There were also the cigars--White Owl, El Producto, Romeo y Julietta, and Swisher Sweets. Lighters, fuel & flints, pipe cleaners--one did not have to go far to see any of it.
As a longtime pipe smoker, I have a couple cherished Grabows--a Duke, a Freehand, and a #83 Bent Bulldog. All are a minimum of 50 years old--and were advertised as 'pre-smoked.' I sure have smoked the hell out of them all in the past 30 years...
Icom 7300 & Heil ICM mic
I recently added a new (to me) Icom 7300. For someone with a mediocre voice, I sure like playing with microphones. To date, I have been using several different mics--and my boom mic has been a Shure SM-57, boosted by an inline phantom powered XLR preamp. The Shure has been compared to the Heil ICM, mostly given the 'punchiness' of both mics.
Another unbelievable Heil used bargain appeared recently. The last was a tried once Pro Elite IC headset, the AD-1-iC adapter, and a never opened HS-2 switch that was not mentioned in closing the deal. $170 shipped. Sorry, I just had to mention this--I can't help myself. Keep your eyes open--these deals are out there...
Anyway, about the latest bargain. I now have a new (to me) Heil ICM on my mic crane. I have been coasting it along at around 60-65% gain. Reports as usual are subjective and often fantasy--some saying a bit low, others insisting perfect, and one guy with cheap OTC hearing aids saying it was a bit hot.
I would like to hear from any of you with experience on a 7300/ICM combo as to what gain settings you like--and whether you are using the Icom's TX treble/base adjustments as well.
Icom 7300 Series tuner boards
Up to now, I have been finessing several dipoles (80/20% OCF & 130' Doublet) to maximize their efficiency using only the Icom's internal tuner. In my rig, this is not stock--SP9SOY’s antenna tuner range modification has been applied:
https://pc5e.nl/downloads/ic7300/Mods/IC-7300-Antenna-tuner-wider-range-modification-by-SP9SOY.pdf
As discussed in the article, I graded out and matched a resistor that was as close to 100K as possible. My discovery working with the decade box is that a variance of as little as 1K either way significantly changes the performance range. As is, this gives a 1:6 tuning range at full power--a doubling of the native and very conservative 1:3 OEM ratio.
Anyway, there were tops or bottoms of several bands that I was unhappy with, as I could not get them below a 2:1. Otherwise it was all good at ~1.5 elsewhere. Short story, I picked up an ATU-100 EXT (N7DDC version) tuner and it simply blew the internal tuner out of the water.
Matches across the board at <1.5:1, with most in the 1.1-1.3: range. Quite a few down to the aughts, especially at half power. Confirmed with my grimy Bird 4931. I was stunned.
Now, here is my concern. How is it that a <$80USD bit of Chinesium--on a board smaller than the internal ATU on all 7300's including the MKII--outperforms the mighty Icom?
This has inspired me to add an LDG-100 to my line, and spend more time experimenting with new antennae versus losing half a day hoisting and tuning the same old one--only to find that the fix on one band is the bust on another... 👎
Why is it so difficult for manufacturers, and specifically Icom here--to design and implement a decent internal tuner? But then, one doesn't buy as many Icom AT/AH series tuners either do they? 😄
Horace Scott is melting... (Louisville, KY)
Located in Cave Hill Cemetery (Louisville, KY) is the bust of Horace Scott (1826-1895). Sculpted of very soft white sandstone, what is happening is an example of two forces. The first is 'frost wedging', whereby water saturates the sandstone and forces break in the surface. Aside from environmental exposure (acidity), this is a common failure in looser sandstone aggregates.
The second is 'sheeting', whereby larger sections separate from their underlying core mass. I can recall it beginning to significantly decay on the upper left side around the ear in 2003. This image dates from 2017. A large piece of his beard is seen lying to the right of the plinth base.
Far from home, Rochester NY
Located in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester, NY is the grave of a Cypriot with a story. It was told really well in 2012 by Paige Palmieri, a University of Rochester student in this report from a project titled "Speaking Stones."

I shot these 22+ years ago, and I doubt that the original structure still stands. The location is along a county road joining US 27, between Lancaster & Nicholasville, KY. Camera was a Canon A-1, and the light seals on that body had begun to fail. The sprocket holes are clearly visible, cropped out on the second shot. Fixed with new seals soon as I saw this come out of the tank...
