A friend has a Shure super 55 Deluxe and asked if it's good enough to record vocals with it.
This might be a question for the Microphone sub, but I'm starting here.
I recently reconnected with some old band mates of mine. We were a good band back in our time and even won on Star Search. Good original songs for that time. The subject of maybe doing some remote recording came up, as they still write. I'm the only one that has stayed up with modern recording tech and none of them even have an interface nor a DAW. I know, it's a tall order, but their smart guys and I think I can walk them through the process. Their all no stranger to recording studios.
The singer, who has an amazing voice, asked if his Shure Super 55 Deluxe would do in a recording situation. I'd never seen one before. It seems, looks are the only thing it has going for it. (ie) Sonics, Plosives, Et Al) I told him I would look into it and have yet to break the news that I don't think it would yield good results, or would it? It needs a cloud lifter, in the least. I think He needs some sort of LCD, to be honest. However, budget is a consideration, especially as they all are going to lay down some money for an interface. Which I'm suggesting a Volt 2 or something like it.
I'm very savvy on Pro Tools, I've been on it since '98, and am going to suggest they get "Intro" so I could walk then through the steps. They don't need more than 8 tracks respectively. The singer has Studio One and has a good understanding of computer based software. He has a video company. So the DAW work flow shouldn't be too hard for him.
My question would be, Given the budgetary constraints, What Mic/Mics would be a good suggestion. My first thought is an AT 2020 of something in that range. Or would the 55 Deluxe even be a viable choice? At $250, You would think it would sound at least halfway decent. Reviews say otherwise. It does look fancy, in a Retro kind of way. He uses it for his Single act playing around the Panama City Beach**,** circuit.
In the end, the goal is just trying to rekindle an old flame. The old "Getting the band back together"
