The World According to a Workaholic Boomer
I never liked taking vacations. I always had this nagging feeling of wasting time. School was the opposite: I liked being there, even sitting through class. Weekends, for me, were the boring part of the week.
Maybe that's why it bothers me to read about young people who, in a time of scarce opportunities, say they'd rather get fired than go back to the office. Spending the day at a company was never just about work. It was chatting over coffee, picking up things without realizing it, flirting, arguing about sports, watching people be people.
One thing I always particularly loved: being part of a technical team. Someone would bring in a weird result, someone else would try to figure out why a hypothesis didn't hold up, and we'd think it through together until we spotted what everyone had missed. A kind of collective clinical eye. It wasn't just about solving a problem. It was feeling like your experience actually mattered to the group.
And then there was everything else: the birthday that became an excuse to talk to someone you'd already been trading glances with, the weekend game that fueled a week of trash talk, the beer after work.
None of that was in any job description. But that's where a huge part of life happened.
Technology has been quietly erasing, one by one, the reasons we had to leave the house. Remarkably convenient, no question. But along with the lines and the traffic, we also lost the chance encounters: the unplanned conversation, the unlikely friendship, the romance that started by accident, the good story that only existed because a bunch of people happened to be in the same place for hours on end.
The old video rental store had a bit of that. Nobody went there just to grab a movie. The evening started before the movie did.
Maybe we're only now realizing, a little late, that some of the friction we eliminated was actually connection.
And it didn't stop there. Plenty of people now spend a good part of their lives talking to an AI. They talk to it like a friend, a partner, a therapist, and find a presence that's available any time, with no conflict and nothing expected in return.
Maybe that's the most extreme form of isolation: replacing the need to be with people with a machine that simulates closeness just well enough to get by.

[...] Para não deixar dúvidas: Deus não existe."
Três referências, um argumento histórico, nenhuma ofensa direcionada a qualquer usuário.
A resposta
A causa declarada do banimento é a posição defendida: "negar a teologia".
O problema

Retirement gave me time to play, and bread won me over
Now that I'm retired, I finally have time to test ideas in all sorts of fields. I've tried my hand at woodworking, at pool, a bit of everything. Some stuck, some didn't. But cooking turned out to be the real fun.
What I enjoy most is remaking the dishes my mother used to make. She taught me the best ones. One of them was homemade bread, and that's the one I love making the most.
For a while I leaned on an electric bread machine, but it burned out on me. Honestly, that turned out to be a gift. Without it, I discovered the pleasure of working the dough by hand, feeling it come together, kneading it, waiting for it to rise. There's something deeply satisfying about it that the machine never gave me.
The recipe I've been using was actually suggested to me by Claude (the AI assistant). I've made it three times now and I find it perfect, soft and just sweet enough. I didn't expect to enjoy this part of retirement as much as I do.
Anyone else here picking up cooking or baking later in life? I'd love to hear what you've been making.
Minha arte: Pão caseiro.
PÃO DOCE SEM LEITE (feito à mão)
Rende um pão de ~750g
INGREDIENTES
• 280 ml de água morna (não quente)
• 1 ovo
- Juntar tudo
Numa tigela grande, misture a farinha, o resto do açúcar e o sal.
- Sovar (8 a 10 min)
No começo gruda; sovando, ela solta. Está pronta quando fica lisa e elástica.
- Primeiro crescimento
Dia quente: ~1h. Dia frio: 2h ou mais.
DICA p/ dia frio: ligue o forno no mínimo por 1-2 min, DESLIGUE, e deixe a massa crescer lá dentro (morno, nunca quente).
They took the patch off and suddenly the whole world was in FullHD
I had cataract surgery recently, and I need to tell someone who'll understand.
The cataract creeps up so slowly you never feel it happen. The world just dims by a fraction each year, the colors mute, the edges soften, and your brain files it all under "getting older" and moves on. You forget there was ever anything else.
Then they take the patch off.
I'm not exaggerating when I say it was like switching from an old tube TV to a 4K screen. Everything snapped into focus at once. The sharpness, every leaf on the tree out the window was a separate leaf again, not a green smudge. The colors came back saturated: whites that were actually white, a blue sky with real depth to it, like a window had been scrubbed clean after years of grime I never noticed accumulating.
And the thing I wasn't ready for: the three dimensions. The world had volume again. Distance, weight, space between things. It wasn't a flat picture anymore; I could feel the room around me. Faces look alive. Everything looks alive.
Suddenly everything is in FullHD, and I'd forgotten I was living in standard definition.
Now, let me be honest about the other side, because nobody really warns you: the recovery is a genuine nuisance. The endless schedule of eye drops, several different bottles, hours apart. The feeling of having an eyelash stuck in your eye for days, and you cannot rub it. Sleeping only on the other side. The plastic shield taped over your eye every night so you don't scratch it in your sleep. None of it is hard, exactly, but all of it is tedious, and it goes on longer than you'd like.
And yet, it's worth every bit of it. All of it. I'd do the whole annoying routine again tomorrow without thinking twice.
If you've been putting this off: yes, the recovery is a bother. But that one moment when the patch comes off, when the world arrives in FullHD again, is worth the whole thing.
