What're your opinions of Longlegs?

Arin brought up on a Q&A that it was a movie he'd heard hyped up a bit, I think he namedropped Red Letter Media's review as what convinced him to try it, and he was surprised how much he didn't enjoy it. He particularly seemed to dislike Nicholas Cage's shrill performance.

Personally I like the atmosphere and some of the shot compositions, but yeah, I always thought the ending was a botch job.

Signs the US economy has been hollowed out

TLDR:

  1. Tourism Slump

  2. International Bond Divestment

  3. Hardship Withdrawals

  4. Mass Layoffs

  5. Home Foreclosures

  6. Home Seller/Home Buyer Imbalance

  7. Vehicle Repossessions

  8. Consumer Confidence Decline

  9. Food Production Problems

  10. AI Bubble

A listed of all the bubble indicators, some more obvious than others. Personally think the food production problems should be #1, though I guess the author wanted it to be more specific to the US economy whereas problems with food production are very much international.

All I know about it is that that it had the novelty of being a $100,000 movie shot on 8mm with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell in it, and some of the other talent from Evil Dead 2 involved. Funny? Scary? Grimy? Boring?

Fun fact, one of the scenes they dub is from Sherlock Jr, which is also featured on the channel. It's the notorious scene where Buster Keaton broke his neck, didn't notice or learn about it until years later.

To me, Maniac Mansion it feels like a dress rehearsal for Day of the Tentacle(1993). I know there are a lot of retro gamers like Supergreatfriend who aren't fans of voice acting in games, but damn if those performances didn't feel so key to DotT's charm. Also the colors (purple walls, blue people, etc.) are above a level of cartoony where the wackiness works as well IMO. The comedy just isn't quite polished enough yet, probably because they were going for as broad of an audience as possible and didn't want to risk alienating anyone with even slightly esoteric jokes, like how DotT referenced things like Twin Peaks.

I will give Maniac Mansion credit for having a soundtrack that works surprisingly well, and manages to evoke what a lot of that retro-vaporwave music was going for.
