college experience without drinking?

I’m not terribly big on parties but really want to have fun & get myself out there in college. one of the biggest hurdles in HS was honestly not having the right connections to get invited to all of the parties, but also the fact that I refuse to drink.

even with my friends in small groups at night, I would laugh along & hang out with them & make mocktails for myself & make sure they are safe & responsible, but it just gets to the point where it feels as though everyone else is on a different world & I feel moreso like a babysitter (though I avoid doing so). I’ll dress cute, maybe have an energy drink & try to relax, but it just gets so frustrating how much partying seems to be surrounded by alcohol.

I know obviously one of the main strategies is to befriend people with similar lifestyles like that, but its not as though I want to avoid any party with alcohol, I just want ti minimize the feeling of not belonging.

edit: just to clarify, whrn I say I feel like a babysitter its not so much as taking care of them as it is just watching them do stupid shit they wouldn’t typically do sober, & the occasional friend who asks me pre-drinking to take her phone away if she tries texting guys again (which is honestly pretty entertaining, so its more-so the former)

freshman schedule thoughts

had to add to the influx of freshman schedule lmfao, ty to all the veterans giving us advice

if anyone saw my last post switched from Principles of Bio to Bio 1, but PoB had lecture on Wednesday which explains the gap. currently trying to snipe for a FIGs on Wednesday to fill that in bc I don’t wanna be stuck in waiting mode till 3:50 for a psych class.

if its not obvious I’m dorming in Cook/Doug. I’m also totally fine with 8:30s, I’m not a big party person (don’t drink & never will), & religiously wake up at 6am the latest to workout. I’m considering transferring to the school of nursing but as of rn am on track to graduate in 3 years for a double in psych & theater. any advice is appreciated!

how bad is gen bio 1

first & last real bio class was honors bio my freshman year & my teacher was great bc she only gave us take home quizzes once in a blue moon & focused inly on plant bio.

I’m passionate about psychology & loved the AP psych units on the brain & such, & considering applying for school-to-school transfer into nursing. trying to prepare myself & improve my chances without tanking my GPA. signed up for the principles of bio but I have a tendency to underestimate myself, even though I maintained all A’s at a school where all our classes are defaulted to honors level unless AP/IB.

talked to an upperclassman pre-med who said it was light work & that they started out with the most basic ideas in gen chem, while at scheduling the advisor told me it would tank my GPA. how were others experiences? currently at 17 credits with Basic Acting, a FIG, Statistics 1, online Theater History, & Self & Identity psych course (I have credit for gen psych & creative writing alr) plus the principles in bio. only 2 8ams (princ bio) & nothing at 5:10, really trying to optimize my schedule lol

thanks to everyone who’s been answering my plethora of questions in the past week lmfao.

bike storage

I posted once before about possibly biking around workers to avoid the chaos that is the busing system. But I didn’t consider where I would be putting my bike.

Do they have actual secure areas at dorms for people to store their bikes or is it just those outdoor bike racks that someone could easily just cut the lock on and it’s exposed to the weather?

I know they also have the electric scooters, but
a) you have to rent those too to use it, no?
b) when I google it there is a rental program for $50 a semester for renting a bike, but it’s very expensive if it gets lost. has anyone tried this, and ate the bikes worth it?

anyone successfully transferred from SAS to school of nursing? nb

currently in SAS as an incoming freshman on the oath to psych & theatre. considering applying for school of nursing, already have general psych credit, have stats on my schedule, and placed well in math test to be able to take gen bio or chem. currently have general psych credit bio on my schedule but not sure if i want to do that my very first semester.

was told by one of the advisors during scheduling that it is understandably very hard to transfer into the nursing school (as in they take 0-5 school-to-school transfers a year)

has anyone successfully done so, any advice and what courses i should take my first semester?

socially acceptable to study on treadmills?

one of the weirdest questions i will probably post but how socially acceptable would it be to study on a treadmill at one of the lesser crowded gyms? or better yet are their any study places that have walking pads? (one would think either the new budget and tuition increase they could support this but I know thats wishful thinking)

I have adhd and one of the most effective ways i get myself to focus is to work/read/study on my treadmill. I don’t want to be a jerk that hogs a treadmill and will try to space it out but i’m more so asking if anyone else does/has seen someone do this or if i would likely have problems trying?

dorm/school supplies list sharing

hey can anyone who has any list of any level of completeness just copy and paste their list of dorm supplies and/or general college supplies?

I feel like eve try morning i wake up thinking of the most random thing i would never consider bringing/choosing, like if the washing machines take pods or liquid detergent, or the fact i should probably bring q-tips, and will definitely need scissors (why is that the one thing every influencer says people forget? i’ve been bring those to school since kindergarten?)

i will add my own in the comments once i finally finish it

anyone know of any stores hiring near or in campus?

looking for a part-time job while in school, outside of working in/for Rutgers (im an incoming freshman and will be considering that too). I have a part-time job in my hometown, now seasonal, at a Dairy Queen so I’ve worked in the “food industry.” I’ve also worked in maintenance and sales for a red light therapy sauna company selling memberships and cleaning the rooms. I’ve been told by other places I’ve applied to jobs for (restaurants, etc) who said I have a solid résumé.

Anyone graduate who knows they’re still an opening at their old job or any places that like to hire college students in general? I already have been stalking Handshake indeed and LinkedIn, but I have a feeling I’m gonna have the best luck with those informal small businesses (thats how I got the DQ job, walked in and filled out an app lol vs the Sauna was through their website)

as much as I would like to get a paid internship or something that actually looks good on my résumé or in the field i want to study, I really just want to make sure I can survive 🙂

how bike-able is Rutgers

i’ve seen too many horror stories of the busing system. I’m a jersey native so I understand the winters are horrid, but at least for the warmer weather and fall, how bike-able would you say Rutgers is in general? As of right now I’m dorming on Cook Doug, but will likely have classes on bush and college ave. I know bush especially as a big distance so I’m mostly not going to be biking there, but just a general vibe?

like are there bike lanes or sidewalks? Is it very hilly? I toured it once, it didn’t seem bad hill wise, but I know there’s a lot of high traffic streets and I’ll be honest in saying I’m not too familiar with biking as my form of transportation, but nor am I with busing.

in addition to that, how likely would I be to have my bike stolen on campus 🙂

lofting beds and bringing your own AC

To start i just wanna say I am incredibly grateful i was even able to get a dorm, and I’m just looking for extra info on the dorms since I’m an incoming freshman and wanna prepare.

Due to the luck of the draw I’m in a dorm room on cookdoug with AC only in the lounges and no ceiling fan, and the bed is not listed as “loftable,” both things I would prefer having or figuring out a way to macgyver without inconveniencing my RA. I understand that there are usually maximum 8 inch leg lifts for dorm beds that are not loftable on Amazon and portable ACs, but I was looking to lift my bed higher to be able to have a sort of nook underneath, and I’ve asked around and some people have said that we are not allowed to bring ACs in and only fans.

do the windows open that you could put in a portable AC or are we allowed to have standing ACs? although I feel a standing AC would take up too much room. Someone said you need to have a doctor’s note to bring in an AC and I technically have off the chart allergies, both seasonal and food, so i honestly might be able to since it gets that bad.

additionally, has anyone had any luck lofting their bed in an unloftable room?

so I’m a newly admitted student who will be commuting using the trains to and from school. one-way trip is two hours and I really really wanted to move out of my house but sadly my mental health is not worth $15,000 lol.

I have talked to my guidance counselor here at my high school and she’s amazing and was in the same boat as me and told me when she commuted to a different school she would sleep in study areas and like shower in the gyms [she doesn’t tell me this to like give me dumb ideas, but she knows a lot about what’s been going on bc im quite literally a mini her and genuinely just means to give me hope] and so I was wondering if there are places to do the same? as I’ve found only one study area ask that is actually open for what looks like 24/7.

I know people who are going to the school and dorming but I don’t want to intrude on them and I also am required by my parents to pay $1000 a month for my tuition so I can’t afford to pay for any sort of motels or anything down there. Is there any areas to study or things that one could lay down for three hours at like two in the morning lol? or literally anything is helpful, thanks!

i’ve done a lot of research but it’s still a bit confusing. I’m an newly admitted HS student taking 4 APs this year, two of them I know will contribute to my intended major and then the other two are AP government/politics and AP micro economics. I am neither doing a history or finance or business related major. I would assume that AP Gov would apply to a Gen Ed but would microeconomics as well? I obviously intend to try my best in all of them, but it’s helpful for prioritizing in these final review days. thanks for all the help everyone has provided in previous questions! i can see a lot of admissions questions can get annoying lol but its really helpful to us.

just committed this weekend and going through the motions lol. can someone explain why we get two emails, the scarlet NetID and then the personalized one we make with our full name? i now have a google account with the NetID one based in the enrollment checklist, and it says that emails to the NetID will go to the personal… what? which do i use, or do i actually have to monitor both? It says to use my personal for contacting peering and teachers, but then sign in to Microsoft with the NetID one… Any advice is greatly appreciated.
