To women of Brisbane, do you approach men?

Hello,

I am a young man in Brissy doing some research about people and social dynamics. I’ve noticed quite a few times online, there is a rhetoric about men not approaching in the women’s world, yet in the manosphere men complaining about “hypergamy” and somehow all the women approach the top 1% men.

I know that’s all up in the clouds. However, I go to Uni and as someone with a thing for people and culture, I can point that pattern pretty consistently at least. You pull up a few posts on the uni’s stalker page or the love letters page, and it seems a decade ago, the dynamics were a bit different.

My question to women and (men), how do you show that you’re interested in the other person nowadays? How do you send those signals? Do you no longer find your self being approached? What makes you not take the first initiative in 2026?

Cheers,

No internship this summer and graduating next year.

Hello,

I've applied to a bunch of internships this time around, however got no luck. It's a ghost town right here in Brisbane. I am still working on finishing up a product by next week, while I aim to work on another one in a few weeks time. I've got an AWS CCP cert exam in a month's time. I have got a couple of AI Cloud Certifications under my belt as well. I am making Open-Source contributions here and there too. I feel pretty shit as I extended my degree by 2 years, yet I am getting no luck.

How do I maximise my chances of getting a grad role or an entry-level SWE job? F me.

I've heard entry-level government roles are not too bad to just get a foot in the door. I applied to an entry level customer service specialist role at a bank, they told me to apply it next year as my uni commitment was getting in the way. So, it's not like I can't show my skills the right way to be employed, but I want to maximise chances of breaking into corporate for now.

Those who were in my shoes few years ago or those with more insights into the market, how'd you go about breaking into tech? What else do I need to add to my body of work to get a job in 2026/2027?

Cheers,

Doing MMA with a severe bad eye sight?

Hello,

I am thinking of joining a MMA gym near my place, however, my eye sight is pretty horrible, we're talking -8/-7.5. How are people with an eyesight as bad as mine manage doing MMA?

I wear soft daily disposable contact lenses, and I have tried just doing light sparring without them on, and it's a brutal game lowkey. Reading threads on this Subreddit and a few others from people in my shoes suggest that the contact lenses my pop out a couple of times, however, it's manageable, while others recommend training blind.

I thought about doing BJJ for the time being, however the BJJ gym near me seemed like a cult, and I just prefer starting out with striking because of my early background in Karate.

My question is how are people with a severe eyesight manage doing MMA?

How to get a grad role in tech if I don't have any internship?

Hello,

I am graduating from CS end of next year, and even though I have applied to internships this year and yet to hear back from a few, I wonder how do you stand out when applying to grad roles in today's grotesque-looking stinking market?

If there are barely few grad roles each year and I'm assuming that previous year's interns would have gotten return offers, where do those who don't get an internship go?

Taking this up a notch, where do those don't even get a grad role go?

I will be applying to grad roles next year, and I am trying to lock in and build a strong body of work to eventually get a chance at coming out on top. If I don't hear back those internship applications, then oh well, I need to double down on what I am doing.

Cheers,

Moving out as a [21M] casual in retail with no Centrelink while studying?

Hey,

The situation at the house might be going down the drain and I might once again be asked to leave in near future. I [21M] work as a casual in retail and I have saved up around $8k so far. I am still studying however I extended my course by 2 years and thus I believe I am not eligible for Youth allowance. My hours fluctuate, however I get $330 a week on most weeks.

The last time I got kicked out, I reached out to the homeless hotline, the services weren't quite helpful to me. I have never had Centrelink in my life. I have asked AI about what kind of payment might be best for me, but it's all bumbo jumbo. I don't have access to my parents' income records. So, there's that.

I have looked around rooms for $170-190 a week and on paper I might have the savings to support myself for a year, but I have no safety net to fall back onto. At work, they might even cut my hours as they hired a high schooler and my hours were reduced recently. I will be graduating end of next year, I was hoping I would make this final call once I have a grad offer in my hands.

If I move out now in a cheap room, I would pretty much be saving 40-50 bucks a week max. An additional 100-200 a week would help me out a lot and I am wondering if given my circumstances would I even eligible for Centrelink?

tldr; 21 studying full time (3 units per semester) bringing in roughly $330 a week as a casual in retail. What Centrelink payments would I be eligible for and would it make sense to move out without one in the worst case?

Cheers

Hello,

I appreciate those reaching out to me in the past few days offering any kind of support to help me out. When I got kicked out at 2 in the morning out of the blue, I had no place to go to. It was pouring outside, and I turned to Reddit to seek some advice. While I found a cozy dark shed to sleep under, I managed to do it until the parents let me back in. I rang multiple hotlines thanks to askizzy, however no help was available at that understandably. Initially, I was only allowed to stay in for a few days, however because of my efforts to find a room to move out to , I am able to negotiate a short period stay for now. So, I am not in need for any immediate emergency accommodation.

However, I am now aiming for a cheap room closer to the city. I have 2 sharehouse inspections lined up in the next few days for under $220 bucks a week. I am hitting people on Gumtree, Flatmates and Marketplace right and left to get my hands on any listing suitable for my budget. I have no rental history and it's my first time moving out so, I am just winging at it. I am not sure if there's any other service out there that can help me out with long term affordable housing. It's been a nightmare trying to get an appointment with a Centrelink social worker since I have never done it before, although if it works out it can be a great help.

I have food and everything sorted out for now. Thanks to those who were kind enough to offer me food and basic essentials even when you don't know who I am and how I look like.

I got enough savings and okay-ish casual hours to survive for the next few months. I have already applied to a few part time jobs to get my hours up as my current retail job won't help me survive long-term, and I am in the middle of doing online assessments as a few have already moved forward with my application.

Any advice on how I should go about standing out when looking to rent out a room for the first time without any prior rental history? Cheap okay-ish places to just hang in there while I save up and build myself up.

Cheers

Hello,

I have delayed my graduation by 2 years as I did one year part time and failed a semester. This is my penultimate year so I am supposed to be doing an internship end of this year, however it's a ghost town at the moment.

I'm also experiencing homelessness (post linked) and while I try to think long-term and find ways to increase my income, I am puzzled by how should I go about it. I have a decent amount of savings to survive for the next few months, however while my casual job helps me pay the bills for now, it won't be the case long-term.

I am pouring time on assignments at uni and a few projects to help me get an internship this year, which will hopefully get me into the grad roles. However, because of the unforeseen circumstances, the what-ifs seem unreasonable.

I'll be getting into a part time job for the time being to just barely survive, however they expect me to work over the Christmas, and therefore I will be missing out on the internship.

So my main concern if I were to miss out on the internship this year and get into my final next year (fifth year), how easy would it be for me to get a grad role?

Family domestic violence stuff, I got kicked out.

I called the homeless hotline up, they said to ring back tomorrow.

I work as a casual in retail and get 10 hours or so. I have saved up enough money. I have a gym subscription.

I don't know what to do.

Study at uni.

Race: brown, I grew up here.

Edit

30th 1:51am I have a warm blanket now. I have decided to sleep under a shed for now. I appreciate all the words. I am just overwhelmed.

30th 8:00am - I slept on the streets until 4 when I begged the parents to let me stay for a couple of days until I find a place to move out. So, I have a roof to sleep under for a few nights. I appreciate people reaching out to me. I'll be contacting Uni today and see if I can secure affordable accommodation.

30th 10:35am - reached out to Uni services, and I am told somebody from their welfare team will reach out to me. I am trying to find a cheap sharehouse under $200/week as I have a few days until I move out.

30th 11:43pm - Just sent out a bunch of Job applications today to get more hours. I will be contacting Centrelink tomorrow to get whatever assistance I can get. Sent out heaps of requests to people on flatmates, gumtree and Maketplace, the success rate is pretty low. Looked into affordable hostels for a few nights between now and then if I need some space urgently. I couldn't get my head around at 2 clock, so I got some stuff in handy for now.
